On BBC4. Was that the 1972 League Cup Final programme those Chelsea fans were looking at? That's a pretty tenuous SCFC link to make a thread about mate Some briefly shown chelsea fans looking at a programme which may or may not have been from a match involving stoke. Suppose it is a Monday.

Must be a bit of a Stoke link?

More to the point (at which this really does need to be moved to Everything Else) have the railways improved since being privatised? IMHO they are pretty much the same.

I remember getting a train every Saturday from Meir Station to Stoke. Like Thatcher, Beeching should have been hung, drawn and quartered. OS.

Haha so within six posts of a thread about "The Good Old Age Of Steam", first Stoke City and then Saint Maggie and politics have been drawn into it. I was hoping it was a thread for us old trainspotters to reminisce about Crewe, Whitmore and Longport. Or how we used to "freight bag" a free ride from Stoke to Crewe and spot the Brittania Class Steam trains being refitted in the repair depot. Did anybody have a. Trainspotters Book where you could tick off or underline the trains you had spotted by name and number where applicable. This one was the combine volume which covered all regions of British Rail and too expensive for us youngsters so I had the regional thinner one that cost around 2/6d or 12.5p. Attachment Deleted

My dad used to get the train from normacot station (by the rec) to Blackpool with his mates when he was a lad. I remember there used to be a picture in the tam o' shanter pub of the old station when I was a kid. It always fascinated me, especially as it was all gone long before I was around.

To be fair CPO(A)OS, the railways were losing money hand over fist. The situation just wasn't sustainable back when Beeching carried out his report. Thatcher was a different story, though. There are certain utilities that just should be part of a nationally accountable, government-funded network, and the railways, along with electricity, water and gas should never have been privatised. The French and Germans are just pissing themselves while they drink at our trough.

I used to live in East Grove in Meir and the rumble of the trains coming through Meir tunnel took a fair while to get used to. I miss the Steam trains at Meir station though wheels used to be as tall as me and better stand back when they pull into the station or you'll be sucked in we were told.

Those Coco class are still operating on mainline and heritage railways. Over 50 years old and the Mirlees Blackstone straight config engine was a legend of a beast used for many applications including ship propulsion and generators. Came across them many times in my naval career, the only downside was they leaked oil like a sieve. In fact if a Merlees Blackstone diesel did not leak it was a brand new, unused one.
