I remember getting excited reading on the back page of the Sentinel that we had signed Vince Hilaire.

After all the chasing Diouf really excited me as I believed and still believe he's got lots of goals in him and will get better. At the time Adam and Ireland really impressed me more so because of what they'd shown at Blackpool and Man C respectively. I had no idea what we were getting with Bojan and thought he may have been a spent force and a huge gamble. How wrong I was. What a player.

Surprised no one's said Nzonzi. When he landed I knew we'd just bagged an absolute boss in midfield. I guess he's not an "exciting" player.

Mike Sheron, just because it meant we were getting rid of Keith Scott.

I can remember being really excited about signing Chris Greenacre; seemed to be scoring for fun for Mansfield....I was very young!
I know it's hardly the modern era!

Crouch was definitely up there but the most exciting timing wise for me and probably the catalyst of our good times a coming for SCFC was Lee Hendrie. His signing was a coup especially as up until that point he'd been a regular for high flying Villa & coz we were hovering just above the relegation zone in the Championship at the time. Always remember his free kick goal at Elland Road, class. Although we just missed out on the play off's that season, & things ending abit sour with him ultimately, I always look back on the Hendrie signing as being the spark that reignited our fortunes to take us to where we are today. I even had 'Hendrie' on the back of my black Puma away top from that season.

Going back a bit....Gordon Banks.......the best keeper in the world and a World Cup winner. can't get much better than that, can it? Dates us both dunnit. Toss up for me between Gordon Banks and Geoff Hurst. As you said, Banks was best keeper in the world and World Cup winner. But don't forget Hurst is the only player to have scored a hat-trick in a World Cup Final.

Getting Bruce Grobbelaar on loan seemed a great acquisition to my young mind. And it was (for a couple of games).

Not a player but manager...Chris Kamara. Ex player, had done well for us as a midfield general and done a good job at Bradford.
I was convinced he'd do a great job here but never worked out at all.
To say I was gutted was an understatement.

Recent past, Michael Owen. This was a striker of real pedigree and I felt he would really improve our team. Shame he wasn't given a chance.
Plenty in the past.

Hudson, Mcilroy & Dave Watson. Watson was first choice England CH - until he signed for Stoke.

Owen was never going to work out. One of Tone's sticker book signings.
Players I was excited about who lived up to it (to a degree at least): Grobbelaar, Sheron, Hoekstra, Simmo, Taggart, Eustace, Ricardo, Ethers, Pennant, Moses.
Players who didn't: McMahon, Lightbourne, Dorigo, Harper, Kolar, Tuncay, Jones, Palacios.

Modern times? It seems like yesterday when we signed Roy Vernon, a famous player from a big club. And, on the same day, Harry Burrows - who I'd never heard of. Harry was one of the best signings we ever made, Vernon, not so much.
But the most exciting signing we ever made, in fact the most exciting and influential signing anybody in Britain ever made - seriously - was Stanley Matthews.

It's an odd one but Shea and Butland! I'd watched Shea's highlight clips and heard about who he'd had trials with and thought he was the next big thing! I thought he would be a first season Arnie! And Butland was very good value IMO and was looking to be our future no.1

Agree with that Delia (Roy Vernon who's claim to fame was that he could smoke a cigarette in the showers). My favourite at the time was Jimmy McIlroy.

Rikki Dadason, no seriously. After the long wait and his debut goal v Barnsley who could blame you. I shared the excitement only to be told by a good friend at the club that his knee was so bad, he could barely even straighten his left leg. It was fair to say that dadason was a good player but sadly was damaged goods. I can remember shirts being sold outside the ground and mugs saying 'its Daddi time' Brilliant!!!
