There really is no excuse for not bringing in video for the 4th official to rule on that sort of incident. As Halsey said on the radio this morning, the game was probably held up for 3 minutes after the tackle so there is no way that video technology would slow the game down in that sort of situation. Halsey was of the opinion that video technology could safely be used in instances where the game was stopped anyway (free kicks, penalties which the ref was minded to give and offside "goals") and he and a lot of referees were in favour of bringing it in for those situations. Beyond that it would need more careful consideration and a few experiments to work out what would disrupt the flow of the game too much.

I don't think it was that bad of a mistake to make tbh. 23 and 25 at a glance are similar and Dawson didn't go to him and say it was me.
Clear fuck up and he should be demoted for a week or two but then so should the linesmen and fourth official who should be there to help and didn't.

If you're not able to tell the difference between players, how the f*** are you going to give yellow and red cards?

I missed our peno shout yesterday and I have a better view than the officials. He let play go on and the players essentially became one, I can see how he cocked it up. It's why his colleague's have got to help. And Dawson, who hid from it all!

I haven't seen anything like that since last Friday night in a Soho bar The two players were that close and the numbers that similar that in a split decision I can see why he could get it wrong.... So referees are confused by players being close together? Clearly, the F.A. must issue an edict whereby every 'Prem' side's two central defenders should be split apart as Stoke's two CHs were for Palace's second goal! Now, that should solve your problem

It was an error but it's one that can easily happen.

For me, he has noted the number of the second tackle and not the first. At least he admitted the mistake.

It was an honest mistake. He will be gutted. You move on. If he makes it again then you start to wonder.

What was the lino and 4th official watching to help him out? They can sort it in the championship and did but not the Prem? Incompetent the lot of them.

How about printing the shirt numbers in Braille for the benefit of the referees?
