I think Everton would certainly tempt him. They have a decent squad which is currently being mismanaged by Martinez, ripe for the kind of job he's done with us where he takes over the nucleus of a good team and brings out it's potential with the right tactics and additions. We can pump our chests and beam with pride as much as we want but the reality is we're extremely close to the limit of what we can achieve as a club right now. The highest we could ever finish unless we unearthed someone from abroad in Ronaldo's class is 6th or 7th place and we're pretty much there now. And competing for a cup is as much about the draw as anything else, Chelsea away in the third round and we're probably out however good our side is.
While they probably don't have much mor money than us, if at all, there's no doubting that there's far more prestige in managing Everton and consequently far more recognition and reward if you do well. We're unfashionable and no-one other than Stoke fans cares or wants to read about us which is why his brilliant job is being completely ignored and we're getting no recognition or acknowledgement at all despite the fantastic job he's clearly doing. Had he been doing a similarly good job at somewhere like Everton he'd be getting loads of coverage and praise like Martinez got last season and this won't have gone unnoticed by him.
Basically he'll have ambitions of managing one of the really top clubs with the ultimate dream being United. Do a great job at somewhere like Everton and he may have a shot. Do a fantastic job at Stoke and all he'll ever get is the odd column deep in the sports pages saying what a great understated job he's doing. It's all hypothetical right now but personally I think if he was offered it he'd probably take it so long as he was given a similar or better budget to what he'd have here.
It's a bit like getting a degree from Staffs University or Cambridge. You might have learned exactly the same stuff and produced work of exactly the same high standard but when it comes to jobs the guy with the Cambridge degree would get it purely because of the prestige.

He'd be mad not to go to Everton if they came calling.

He'd be mad not to go to Everton if they came calling. You say that but by his own admission he has never been happier anywhere in his managerial life. We are a club that suits his personality and enables him to live the life he wants to live outside of football. He mentioned our glass ceiling in an interview earlier this week. Everton, big club though they are have the same glass ceiling for as long as they ply their trade at goodison park. If a club such as Everton came for him I'd like to think he'd stay here as things stand. Don't underestimate the role of Bowen and Eddie in such a decision either. I believe that both live in the area and love doing so.

The step to a top four position is nothing like as great going from doing a very good job at Everton as it is from doing a very good job at Stoke City. If we'd won our home games against Villa, Leicester and Burnley this season we'd be in a bona fide race for a champions league spot and we'd be worried about losing him this summer, never mind at some point in the future. Just like any top player, a top manager will want to ply his trade at the very highest level.

If he was to leave here for another prem club I'd rather it be Spurs than Everton, Levy will eventually sack Pochettino for something or other in the next 18 months

Everton are a big club alright and a much bigger one than us. We will always have the fear of losing him to a bigger and richer club who can enjoy loftier ambitions than our own but he's had a taste of that already so I'm hoping that our club gets sufficiently "under his skin" to keep him here.

Man Utd more likely than Everton - if Hughes has an unspoken ambition I think that is it.

Worst case scenario: Van Butcherface stays on one more season and finishes below us next year. Done deal.

It's good to see a thread where there is a sensible and well thought out debate going on..usually there is someone throwing their keyboard warrior skills, so I must say from what I've read on this thread I've found fascinating..
I agree with a statement that we as a club are at the very height of what we can achieve at the moment I believe, looking at the table I would say the teams above us are 'bigger clubs and better squads' the teams below us are currently lesser in those areas.
I'm delighted with how our club is run and the fact there is emphasis on it being a sensibly run place, I can only commend mr coates and mr scholes on the job they have done..I've never been prouder of our football club.
I'd like to know how people think we can push on and eventually possibly crack top six (if you ever think that could happen) Would it take a billionaire sheikh?

Fill in the corners would be a good start.
Perhaps it is more open than in the past. The Prem is so rich now smaller clubs can pay the wages to attract better players from abroad who might otherwise be drawn to La LiGa, Serie A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1. Stoke are in the Top 30 richlist and better off than most Champions League qualifiers.
And keep Hughes as long as possible. I doubt we will ever have a better connected manager. The relationship with Barca in particular is one to build on.

I'm not sure that a billionaire sheikh is necessarily necessary.

Fair play mate, if I'm being honest I don't think that's the way forward myself..I wouldn't want that of our club because ultimately that isn't stoke. 3/4 more Hughes years, bargain buy here and there, an outlay on someone like moses and it's happy days? That's what I'm dreaming of! We used to get laughed at on the radio because we'll get 'less points than derby'

Whatever about the past, currently I don't think Everton coming along for MH would be at all tempting for him. They are not, and as far as I know without checking, have ever been a top 4 side. They have been a consistent top 10 side, no more than that. I would think it is more likely a top Euro team would come looking for him.

Got to say I agree with that, the brand of football we're playing is the best I've seen since I've been going, I'm only 22 but I've seen a few different managers..I think the Mr Pulis style when we first hit the prem was exciting because it was two wingers running at people and getting the ball into the box, I believe it went stale a couple of seasons before Mr Pulis parted company with us. Mr Hughes seems to have energized the club from top to bottom, I don't normally like being optimistic with stoke because they break your heart, but I don't feel too apprehensive about the prospect of our continued development and success..Fine times to be a potter!

Strange this thread lasted so long
more chance of the moon leaving earth orbit in our lifetimes than this one happening
Like Pulis he (Hughes) is appreciated and settled with Stoke - why on earth would he go jumping into a football hot bed going bad ?

Totally agree and just trust that those in a position to do something about it recognise this. He clearly thinks we can get to sixth at some stage going along as we are. At that point we could be vulnerable without a large injection of money. This big or little club argument doesn't wash for me any more, size of crowd doesn't matter as much as size of following and tv exposure to sponsors.
