Managers too:
many on here wanted Martinez, or worse, Poyet.
Ugh. I have to come clean, I wanted Poyet, then Benitez and when the Hughes story came out I hadn't even considered him. But Coates has definitely made the right decision. Can't say I was enamoured of Martinez & his escapades since have found him out and confirmed many suspicions that he was all mouth (and expensive suit) trousers.
I was definitely anti Poyet after his shit (literally) behaviour at Brighton. (Plus I think hell would have frozen over before St Pete hired that one.)
Benitez would have been a very good appointment potentially but, i think, would have caused friction with the board as I couldn't have seen him getting by on the budget Denise gave LMH these past two years, so maybe was for the better.
LMH & crew were and are far and away the best option for us.
And long may it remain so.

Shane Long. Very glad we didn't sign him. Not what we're looking for.

Remember driving up,from Plymouth to Stoke eagerly listening to Talk Sport regarding George Burley signing for us. Then suddenly a news flash that he had turned us down at the last minute after watching us lose at home to Watford and few days later TP was recruited. Just wonder where we would be had Burley signed. He did ok at Derby saving them form relegation to old division 2 and transformed them without spending too much money into promotion contenders to PL in 2004-05, although they failed to get promoted in the play offs.

At the same time we signed Begovic, I'm sure we were also considering, as an alternative, David James.
Phew... Thank god we got that one right"

We needed a manager desparate, he was in the crowd watching us get thrashed and thought fuck this shit I'm off

I would have loved Zamora here over Kenweye. Zamora could have a bad day and still I'd prefer to have him up front.

To be fair to the club some of these overhyped "targets" are just red herrings. How many times now have signings just come straight out the blue whilst we were waiting for someone else? I do't think we'd ever have signed Zigic and Riviere, just smokescreens.

Just to bring a bit of balance: I agree with all the above posts but we should recognise that how a player performs depends on more than his ability and application. It also depends of how he is managed (carrot/stick), how he is coached, how he is used in the team, how he is supported by the other players, and what tactics are adopted. So a player may be a failure in one situation but blossom in another. If a player basically can't cut it, he won't be any good in any situation, (eg players new to the Prem. who were good in another league but fail) but even quite average players can appear to be exceptional if managed and used in the right way; dare I say Clough was a master at it. I think Hughes has got more out of a number of our players than previously and might have made some of those "failures" mentioned above a success. Just a thought

Remember a lot of people were disappointed after chasing Riviere for a while and then Newcastle ending up getting him for £6million. Turns out it looks like we dodged a fair bullet there. Not a single goal scored yet for him and he doesnt look all that good, whereas In comparison Diouf on a free has scored 8 for us. Must be tons of others we missed out on that turned out to be toss. Popov anyone? Sorry to be a pedant, but he actually scored 2 in the League Cup.

Goran Popov, Tom Huddlestone (fair play the lad knows how to play, but he's hardly looked phenomenal for Hull and his goal return isn't great). Also think not signing Assaidi on a permanent deal in the summer (for whatever ludicrous amount the bin dippers were quoting) was a bullet very well dodged.
