Remember a lot of people were disappointed after chasing Riviere for a while and then Newcastle ending up getting him for £6million. Turns out it looks like we dodged a fair bullet there. Not a single goal scored yet for him and he doesnt look all that good, whereas In comparison Diouf on a free has scored 8 for us.
Must be tons of others we missed out on that turned out to be toss. Popov anyone?

The Zigic hype on here was pretty fierce. Not sure if we were ever in for him though.

Scott Carson was probably the biggest stroke of luck. He was dreadful and we lucked into Sorensen who was great

Remember TP chasing a midfielder. Think his name was Palacios or something. Glad we didn't sign him.

Last year I did a "value for money" long list of strikers that Oaties felt we should have signed over the last few years and moaned about "missing out on"
IIRC Bony was the only success story with the other dozen or so being overpriced and outperformed by the players we already had. With us getting 8 goal Diouf on a free this season I should probably dig it out and do a new comparison.

Riviere looks uber wank but I remember at the time we were after him he was like a back-up choice for someone else. So he never came with glowing references that he was our prime target.
Even so Newcastle have been stitched up for once on a French transfer so thats nice to see.

A few years ago there were a number on here urging Pulis to sign Zigic the 7 foot striker who went to Birmingham and couldn't hack it in the Championship. More of a salvo rather than a bullet.

There was an outcry on here to sign Altidore before he went to Blunderland for a while. Now he is very a special kind of ultra wank.

I was thinking about this last night. Hughes has done a magnificent job for us, we couldn't has chosen a better man for the job - he's done extremely well in the transfer market but he's also been very lucky with his dodged bullets. £6m Riviere, £5-6m Diouf, £5-6m Assaidi, £5m Cattermole, Nelson Oliveira, Aaron Lennon, Tom Ince, Pitroipa, Hoillet. I know that some of these may have done well at Stoke, but it might not have looked quite so rosy and miraculous if we'd splashed the cash on some of these.

Just because players turn out poor for one team it doesn't mean they would be poor for us.
I'll give you Altidore though - he is dog shit.

Wasn't Jammo a pretty good dodge that allowed us to get our mitts on Bego?
More recently (& ones we've been involved with) yes, got to be Riviere.
Still can't decide on Clattermole (sic) don't watch Blunderland obvs but every so often a glowing report turns up that makes you think.
That said, it certianly seems to have been the rocket up the arris that sparked Glenda into, arguably, the best form of his career.

Weren't we in for Bendtner when Arsenal made him available. Did the square root of fuck all at Sunderland, and not much better at Wolfsburg.
Glad we didn't sign David James as well.

Never sure how much substance there was to that one though?
Although it has some considerable credence as he was exactly the type of established PL FWD that would make TP go all giddy and starstruck from 200 paces.

He could have been a half decent player if he'd applied himself. He's just a cunt though and that's why he's shite.

But yes, it looked to me that he thought he had far, far more than he actually had.
So if his dad was spotted at the Brit etc, he goes on the official list.

Ugh. I have to come clean, I wanted Poyet, then Benitez and when the Hughes story came out I hadn't even considered him. But Coates has definitely made the right decision.

Carlton Cole (if not mentioned already) Carlton Cole is like a remote controlled bullet, following Pulis around everywhere he goes but never quite hitting him.
