Unbelievable scenes. On this day in 1934, 84,569 - including 25,000 from Stoke - watched Stoke v Man City in an FA Cup quarter-final. Still an English football record for any game outside of Wembley. Trains leaving the Potteries were so packed there were people in the luggage racks and others hanging out of windows.

Yes, my Grandad went that game - on the back of rickety old motor bike - took them hours to get there & back! Intrepid Stokies indeed.....

I reckon that is a group of Stoke's notorious "firm" at the time - the Dirty 30. So-called, because of the difficulty of removing grime generated by potbanks, steelworks and (here's one for the teenagers) coal mines. Horrific antics of the D30 included apple scrumping, and knocking on front doors and running away. Let us hope those dark days do not return.

Their traffic management system was really stretched after that one.
