I believe that he has died. RIP.
Exemplifies a different era.
The picture of him and Billy Bremner, one of the most iconic in football

Great Player.
Reminds me of one of the great songs from the 70's
Derby,Derby have you got a puff? Yes sir,Yes sir Brian Clough Derby,Derby have you got a spare? Yes sir,yes sir John O'Hare Derby,Derby when you're gonna die? When you sell that cunt Mackay
If anyone's got a copy of that picture where Mackay is lifting Bremner off the ground with one hand, please put it on this thread. A great reminder of Mackay.
RIP

Giant of the game. RIP
The best story I remember about him was when he had just managed Derby to 1st Division champions, he was asked "How much credit should be given to Brian Clough?", who he took over from when Clough was sacked. His answer was none, because if Derby had been relegated he would have got 100% of the blame, so the fact they were champions meant he was due 100% of the credit.

Clough said he knew it was coming together at Derby when he saw Mackay control a game from the back. He was undoubtedly a hard man but this overlooks the fact he was a cultured stylish classy player. The nature of his appointment means his major managerial achievement was largely overlooked. He won the league!! RIP

RIP This one? Iconic picture: - Mackay looks like he has wandered out of a Kray brothers photo - I never knew Alan Bates (left background) was part of the Bill Nicholson masterplan - Bremner looks like he is wearing an oversized borrowed goalie jersey - the itchy green variety that was the only one available in those days - The ref looks like one of those "you are the ref" illustrations. He needs a "pheeeeep" bubble coming out of his whistle. Rock of a player. Hard as nails but as one or two have observed, also a leader, and a very very good player. If he had been born 50 years later he would have been on £150k+ a week, a Bentley and a trophy girlfriend or two.

The likeness is remarkable. Indeed. Of course, for all I know, Venables stunt doubled in Whistle Down the Wind ("He let my cat die - he's not Jesus - he's just a fellah") and A Kind of Loving. To take the analogy a little too far - Dave Mackay really does look like the original Angry Young Man in that picture.

I know full well who Alan Bates is/was (didn't know he had died) but the guy in the photo looks more like Terry Venables than the actor to me. Maybe he is not wearing a black and white kit but rather it is blue and gold!!!!!! We all have our own views of the world and the faces in it.

That'll be because it is (almost certainly) indeed Terry Venables. A rare day off from filming kitchen sink dramas, presumably.

Rock hard player, totally committed, but never...NEVER a dirty player. Bremner was a very good player to, but he was sneakily dirty with it too.

Had the opportunity to see Dave play, and what a player he was. Absolute top top class. Clough replaced him with Colin Todd it was like replacing a Bulldozer with a Paint Roller.

It's confirmed in the Telegraph article with the iconic photo that it is Terry Venables in the background.
All the hard men and rough stuff yet all was fixed by a Bucket of water and a sponge, sports science PAH!
