Actually if you look at the footage, if Ireland hadn't pussied out and turned his back Figeuroa's foot would have gone straight through Ireland's shin probably breaking his leg.
graham poll is an utter bell end, as someone has highlighted, he gave the same player 3 yellows during the euros, or world cup, cant remember which....and also passed the commentator some " interesting facts " about him....in case they wanted to mention them....another fukin ego maniac
Correct. But it doesn't, as Steve Bruce and Graham Poll seem to be insinuating, justify the assault on him later by Figeuroa.
It doesn't, and frankly tit for tat nonsense should be above a Premier League Manager and what was apparently one of the best referees in the world.
I can understand Bruce doing it. He's trying to deflect attention away from an atrocious challenge by one of his players. But Poll, well he's just a media whore, cock.
I'm stunned people don't think Ireland's was a red. 2 inches to the right and Meyler has a serious problem. Timing of a tackle shouldn't determine if a player gets hurt or not. If it does then it's excessive force IMO.
I'm assuming if Jack Wilshere did something similar on Bojan, for example, that we'd be screaming for a little more than a yellow.
When you put it like that then I agree with . Two poor challenges both worthy of a red.

I dont see it really.. watching it on the highlights given above, he goes for a block and to protect himself. If he tries to nick the ball he could end up like Ramsay did - his tackle is very similar to the one from Shawcross that lead to the leg break. Both players know they're going to connect in this instance, Meyer goes for force and Ireland goes for solidity.
Figueroa's follow through on the other hand, makes me think of a stamping horse. Of all the times I played football in my youth I cant think of any instance when I'd feel the need to bring my foot down with that much power after a hoofy clearance.
I quite like Steve Bruce, but having read the sports pages of the Mirror, he is severely deluded (yes, I say it again). He goes on about the match being boring for the fans. It was his team and tactics that made it so. Like I say, deluded. Also, irrespective of Ireland's challenge, there is no excuse for what Figueroa did. For a bloke who scored one of the best goals I've ever seen, that was a terrible injury that he inflicted on Ireland, and he should be suspended for it!

And if he had wings he could have flown out of the way, probably.

Bruce has gone down in my estimation - whatever happened prior in the match, a cold and cynical raking of studs with intent causing such a wound would be classed as assault in any other circumstance and for which there is NO justification.

He's talked absolute bollocks since the game.
It was a poor game, yep thanks to how you set your team up Steve.
Ireland's challenge on Meyler was the worst of the day was it, Steve? Well I can think of at least two that were worse than that from your angels.
The linesman should be getting those sort of decisions for the goal right and his players were annoyed and knew it was offside did they, Steve? Interesting only several replays still leave an element of doubt whether Crouch was offside but there's no doubt that NONE of your players appealed.
Then the ultimate and final piss take, apparently he thinks his head is normal size and that he's not a fat headed fuck who got done over by Lee Hendrie who is about 20 stone lighter than him.
It's reminiscent of when Shawcross was headbutted by Fellaini, that there's an underlying assumption by some in the media that the Stoke player somehow deserved to be smashed up.
However let's not be all Arsenal about this. Once we went public with our complaints about the result of Figueroa's challenge, we opened ourselves up to the "people in glass houses" defence.
If we were going to point the finger at Hull, we needed to be whiter than white ourselves. Clearly we weren't whiter than white in that match, and Bruce is entirely within his rights to point that out.
Something should be done about the studs, if that is what they can do. Figueroa should be banned. End of! Whether the referee saw it or not. Too easy an excuse IMHO.
Bruce Claimed it was his blades. But in the photo on the BBC article showing the aftermath with Ireland on the floor and the hull player getting up clearly showing his boots that are studs?!
MH: You cannot compare the two. Steve did himself no credit. Most managers do it, probably me as well, when you try to protect your player. If Steve had come out and said it was a terrible tackle then everyone moves on... to try to defend it was incorrect. He didn't need to do that.

I was about to say this exact thing then saw you posted it. Another point is I'm pretty sure that studs would be more dangerous in this case. He talked complete and utter bollocks throughout that whole interview.
One thing I don't understand in all this is that referees are supposed to check the players studs. Those studs must have been really dangerous to do that much damage.
