Agreed, he would NEVER be the same if we went ahead with the op. He may recover stronger, but there's a hell of a chance he would recover weaker and we'd lose one of the best centre backs on the planet. We need to nurture him back. If he's going to be fit for the weekend, then for fuck sake don't play him, because 9/10, you inflame an injury just after you 'think' you've recovered. Give him a few more weeks. I'd almost be tempted to tell him to aim for Chelsea. That gives him even longer for his back to recover fully. Our bodies are precious, and we only have one. Treat it with respect, it's not a car. With all due respect do you have access to Ryans medical notes and scans? Do you know what op he would have? No I thought not. uhuh well shoot me for having an opinion.

"We've eased him into it because we don't want him to react to the work he's been given.
"That hasn't happened. As long as there's no reaction to the work he did yesterday, then he's in my thoughts.
"We've got a doubt over Philipp Wollscheid anyway after he came on and was replaced by Geoff Cameron.
"So I've got options if those two (Shawcross and Wollsheid) don't make it."

If it ain't broke don't fix it.
If the players who have stepped in are fit then they deserve to keep their starting places.
Having won 3 games on the bounce it would be unfair to drop one of them to accommodate a player who may be lacking match fitness or risk aggravating an injury again.
