Desperate news for Ryan as I believe he had a chance of being included in the upcoming England games.
The medical staff will give him the best possible care, we have players to cover and surely will look to strengthen the squad in the next transfer window.
'Big clubs" will probably turn their attentions elsewhere in the summer - not a bad thing in that respect

i think its dangerous to play him unless hes 100% fit cos other wise it could get worse so I think we should give ryan the rest of this season off to completely heal and come back stronger next season.

It was an unwillingness to strengthen born out of an arrogant transfer policy. To let one loan go and let a senior defender go the day before the final game before the window shut is either arrogant or negligent and most likely both. Have to agree with this. The fact we could only name a 23 man squad, says it all really. Especially as that 23 included PO who will be lucky to be fit to make the last couple of games, at best. So really we named a 22 man squad.

Is there a "window" for signing free agents?
Cameron / Texiera in the mix but after that further injuries / suspensions could be a problem
I would hope that the management are prepared for all eventualities

Fair few players in the past like that. Ledley King used to train once a week. Pretty sure I read somewhere that knee troubles meant Paddy Vieira used to have two days rest after a game as well. Walters problem is nothing like those though! Walters has something called fat pad trappment and the rest in between games to stop him have it operated on! I personally think in the summer he will have an operation or the rest over the summer will heal it! King and McGrath both had arthritis and no operation or treatment could fix their problem! Sounds like something you'd order from a Thai restaurant.

Steve Bould had spinal surgery and went on to play his best football. Obviously at a vastly different level, but I had a disc removed in my early twenties and played rugby and football with no problem after. I still have pain now and then and always will but a memory foam mattress has worked absolute wonders for me, I'd suggest he gets one of them if he hasn't already. I work in the bed industry and depending on the nature of the back condition a memory foam mattress could be the worst thing possible. In terms of sleep technology in relation to sports science, memory foam is dated. Profile, zoning and geltex is where it's at these days.

Like I say it depends on the nature of the problem. Memory foam offers good pressure relief but virtually zero spinal support. If your problem is nerve related, memory foam can be great but if it is spinal or disc related it can cause more damage.

We're in a position where Johnny Tex is actually to be used, it can't be right! And that's no slight on him (I've seen him play for 5 minutes vs Portsmouth) but he should be nowhere near the first team this soon unless he was very good....

I significantly remember Ryan having problems with his knees and his back not long after we signed him because he was still growing! He shot up two inches in twelve months and was having sugar injections and rest between games to help him overcome the pain. I wonder if that's now catching up with him? He's played a hell of a lot of games for us over the past five years. How tall is he??

Like I say it depends on the nature of the problem. Memory foam offers good pressure relief but virtually zero spinal support. If your problem is nerve related, memory foam can be great but if it is spinal or disc related it can cause more damage. A bit of a paradox here.A prolapsed disc impinges on a nerve, that is what causes all the symptoms,it is known as reffered pain. I'm not a medic so can't comment on that specifically but lets, for a minute, assume that you are absolutely 100% correct. If you have a pro-lapsed disc which causes nerve issues, then it is a fairly safe bet that as well as pressure relief, a key aspect of the requisite sleeping surface will be a combination of pressure relief and spinal alignment. Memory foam will give you the pressure relief but it won't give you the spinal alignment, hence the problem can be exacerbated. Basically, during the night and only when you're asleep, your spine rehydrates. To rehydrate properly, you should rotate during the evening around 35 times. Anything significantly more than that could be classed as a "tossing and turning". In a memory foam mattress, depending on the brand and construction, you will sink into the mattress which is great for pressure relief but not for spinal alignment. The fact that you sink into it also means that rotating in the night is difficult because essentially you have a trench that you need to climb/roll out of and this can restrict the movement that you need to rehydrate your spine whilst not disturbing your sleep. There are also different types of memory foam. Squishy and not so squishy but by nature as memory foam gets warmer, it gets softer. New Sleep technology offers many of the pressure relieving aspects of Memory foam but also offers a degree of "push back" that helps to keep the spine at the right angle, eliminating pressure points, easing pain and allowing the spine to rehydrate. Danny Ings was sleeping on a memory foam mattress that was making his back/hamstring injury worse. He missed several weeks of the early season as a result. He had a bed specifically designed for him, incorporating the latest in sleep technology and his back/hamstring problems have subsided and he seemingly can't stop scoring goals. People with bad backs assume that they need a memory foam mattress or a firm mattress when in actual fact, those things, depending on the nature of the complaint, can make a bad back worse. Until the last 12-18 months, even medical experts and chiropracters, buying into the virtues of memory foam that companies like mine would extol, made the same, incorrect assumptions. To back this up, I would also quote the example of Gary Neville who had a bed given/recommended to him which would aid his recovery from injury. Practically 2 years later, he was still struggling with the same injury and his bed had actually made his injury worse. A bed can't cure a back injury but it can significantly improve it. The answer isn't as simple as memory foam. EDIT - I might also add that I have a pelvic problem which causes problems with the nerves in that area and I've always had trouble sleeping due to pins and needles were I to lie in one position for any length of time. A memory foam mattress served me brilliantly in terms of aiding the back/pelvic pain and reducing the nerve pressure but I still couldn't get a proper nights sleep because I'd overheat, which is the second biggest drawback of memory foam, after the spinal alignment issue. If you are a warm sleeper, a memory foam mattress, regardless of the brand or type of memory foam, is simply "not for you".

He had a very late growth spurt that caused significant "growing pains" and "back trouble".

Some bloke biscuit somebody said he would play 2 more games this season max and was abused to high heaven .
There is a pattern emerging of understating big injuries odemwinge , Bojan now this for whatever reason.
Best for me now would be get It done but obviously no one takes spinal surgery lightly but worse case is he rests isn't cured and it's then surgery later in the year that takes him out for next season for sure we need 4 centre backs in the squad next year as this could flare up at anytime either way .
Get well soon Ryan it's a small comfort this probably means you will be with us next season but after the service you have given we would mich Rather see you fit well and playing .

The doom and gloom in wishing him a spewst recovery and thanking him for everything is what ?
I simply pointed out that anyone who knows football and injuries could see imediately Bojan's injury waa a killer and so was Ryan's to say on Monday he had a disc problem that woukd take a week it settle was equally out of touch with reality .
For some reason unknown we don't want to indicate how serious injured are not necessarily wrong but it's a pattern .

If he has spinal surgery he will never be the same again. Is rest a better option then? For me, he needs to be given the best treatment in the world. If that's rest, then so be it. We're close to mathematically safe (and that's only mathematically, really we already are) and it's a non argument rushing him back. I would rather he not play again this season and be fresh for next. Wolly proved again at the weekend he does have the ability, if only lacking a bit of pace. He's inconsistent and lacks Ryan's natural leadership but that'll come. Muniesa is yet to come back, Wilson is also available. Geoff is also two matches away from a return. We have cover, none are Ryan but they're all capable of filling in. Johnny Tex is the only one I feel needs work. He looked exposed against villa. From what we saw Saturday you're being kind to Tex there. Reminded me of Ali Dia that Souness signed for Southampton. Wonder if LMH got a call from someone pretending to be Sócrates saying Tex was his nephew or something Hopefully that will just prove to be stage fright and he'll come good in time.....
