Thanks for sharing the article. I never tire reading about it and it just shows how much football has changed. Jimmy Greenhoff will always be fondly remembered by fans of a certain age and it just highlights to me that nowadays some quite ordinary players get to play for England and become multi millionaires. However, none of them will have the respect that Jimmy has from many Stoke fans of a certain age.
Cheers

Jimmy Greenhoff and Alan Huson had an almost telepathic understanding on the pitch.

I was lucky enough, along with a 100 or so other Stokies, to hear Jimmy give a rare insight into the day Waddy told him of the need and plan to sell him. The man had tears in his eyes whilst telling the story and did so with absolute emotion and straight from the heart. I felt privileged to be there and honestly he was far from the only bloke in the room with tears in his eyes I can tell you!

In the 70s that was a HUGE amount of money In 1972 £250 was worth approx £3000 in todays money. A decent amount yes, but nothing compared to the ridiculous amounts the best players get today.

In all of my 52 years of supporting Sttoke theres only been 2 occasions when I wanted to walk away. 1 Losing to Blythe Spartans 2. Selling Jimmy .
The one player deserving of a mention in my opinion is big John Ritchie, another legend RIP.

Great read.
I still remember the day Stoke stopped the "unstoppable" Leeds run. Something told me that day we would turn them over after drawing at Elland Road and that Stoke had "the Indian sign" on them.

When he joined the shit he helped to hold their young side together like Cantona did in the win nothing with kids team.

Too right - I was there that day as a young lad in the Boothen - terrific atmosphere, and the roof nearly came off when the third goal went in. Wonderful memories.

Didn't we sing his name for a few games after he'd left? The 'Amazing Grace' tune?
Would fit nicely with Bojan's name that one...

Love Greenhoff's quote about Peter Dobing. "He could’ve been an England player if he’d wanted it, but he used to say football interfered with his fishing. As long as he had his pipe and a whisky he was happy.”

One of the nicest couples you could meet. So down to earth and friendly. I've done work for them at their house over the last couple of years. If you want a blast from the past his son is the spit of him In his playing days. He too is a really quite down to earth lad. Lovely family.
Jimmy was just before my time of starting watching stoke but my dad and uncle rave about him. I feel lucky enough to be over there a few times a year and sit and chat all things stoke and football in general.

Would we have avoided relegation if Jimmy hadn't been sent away?

Jimmy Greenhoff and Alan Huson had an almost telepathic understanding on the pitch. Greenhoff was born on 19th June Hudson was born on 22nd June Maybe there is some relevance to signs of the zodiac after all.
