As a full on atheist, I feel I cannot say "R.I.P." on the occasional death thread. Is there an atheist version of this saying?

If you believe there is nothing after death, why say anything, they can't hear you?

As a full on atheist, I feel I cannot say "R.I.P." on the occasional death thread. Is there an atheist version of this saying? Rest in peace makes no reference to religion R.I.P. is a Christian statement and refers to the soul in the afterlife, similar to "May God have mercy on his/her soul".

Rest in peace makes no reference to religion R.I.P. is a Christian statement and refers to the soul in the afterlife, similar to "May God have mercy on his/her soul". I think cheezunoatcakes has hit the nail on the head, Richie. Religious people say "Rest in Peace" as a sort of shorthand to show sympathy to those who are left behind. We atheists can just as easily show that sympathy to the family, as cheezun suggested, by using any form of words that occur to us to show support and sympathy for the family at this difficult time - just as you did a few minutes ago! Sorted, I think!
