I am with Sky for my broadband, and have been with them for a good while. On Friday morning, I received a call from BT offering me a deal on said broadband. To cut a long story short, they asked me to get a Mac code off Sky, and that they would call me back on Monday. Needless to say, when I phoned Sky, they offered me a better deal. Waited for call on Monday and told girl that I would be staying with Sky. I asked if there would be any charges and she replied, no, and that she would cancel the offer that she gave us. I then rang sky Bach and accepted their better offer. Not going into all the rigmarole now, but guess what, I'm going to be charged by BT.

They can't charge you for making an offer.
Also, how will they charge you? Presumably you didn't give them any details for a bank account etc. Especially since they were the ones calling you, that's generally a no-go area right there so I would just refuse to pay.
Nothing needs to be installed as sky use the BT infrastructure for broadband etc anyhow and if you never got any further than a mac code no engineer was coming out to install TV.

Tell them to stick their charge up their arse. Sideways.

I had to go out before, that's why I didn't completely finish the story. As I said this was offered to me over the phone, also amongst this package if I took their broadband at £7- 50 a month, they were giving me BT Sport, ESPN and so on, which in all honesty I wasn't all that bothered about. The thing is I answered the call on Monday morn telling them that I w as staying with Sky, and as I have already said no charge applied. Unknown to me was that after the first call when I said that I would go with them, they more or less immediately added BT sport and so on straight on to the tv. I didn't realise that they could do this, thinking that they had to have the Mac code before they could go ahead. I've explained this in two phone calls to customer service, but they are saying this would have been explained to me at the time. They are now charging me a £30 connection fee, and £13-50 a month for BT sport and so on. I have now sent an e.mail saying how disappointed I am, having had the phone line with them for years, and am waiting for a phone call. Surely if the girl had cancelled as soon as I told her, this should not apply. Also had another two phone calls, and they say they can't do anything as sky have requested that they switch the phone line to them, which, by the way is a term of their better deal. Sorry to repeat myself, but had the thing been cancelled when I first spoke to that girl, this is totally unfair! By the way, because I have been with BT, we paid by direct debit, and they have to give you a final bill when the switch is complete.

Did they explain it to you over the phone when you agreed that sport was going to be switched on immediately because that is the basis of a contract for services such as Bt sport, if you change your mind bout the other stuff you're still liable for BT sport for 30 days mimimum, the broadband will have a cooling off period. Ask them to produce the phone call as evidence

BT are absolutely shit. I left them years ago and a couple of years ago made the mistake of taking up one of their offers. One the day of the switch my phone stopped working, it wouldn't ring for incoming calls. I reported this to them, and after arguing with them for several days that there was nothing up with my phone, they said they would check the exchange. They came back to me and said this was fine and it must be the line from the street to my house. I again said that it was a mighty coincidence that this line had broken on the day that we switched to BT, but the guy in India was adamant that there was a fault from the street. They then spent a day digging up the road and my drive to put in a new line. All to no avail the phone still wouldn't ring. They then said they'd send an engineer out to come and check my phone (still hadn't spoke with anyone in England by the way). The engineer came out, found the phone was working fine. He said he'd go and check the exchange. He returend an hour later looking rather sheepish and said that the fault had been at the exchange all along.
Needless to say I'm no longer with BT. Anyone who is has my deepest sympathy should anything go wrong, as you can only speak with someone on the other side of the planet who has as much idea of whats going on as my pet cat.
BT avoid like the plague.

I've been with BT for years, always had a great service, if I had a problem it's been sorted quickly, one was the line in my house went down at a connection, fixed quickly and free.
As Huddy said, you have 14 days grace to change your mind, if in doubt go to the citizens advice bureau

Can't get fibre here any advise? Honestly there's not an awful lot you can do. No matter who you use, you'll be limited with BT's cabling directly to your house. Some people do benefit from the fact that if you're with BT, and there is a problem they will then repair it for free - or cheaper at least - than if you're with Sky etc who have no control over the quality of the cabling to your home. If BT come out to do repairs and you're with someone else its always a full-price charge.

All this because of a frigging phone call from them. Bastard nuisances. I generally get rid of them, but for once I weakened. Reading this about Sky has got me on edge now. Totally p'd off. I was told you had 14 days in which to cancel, but as I've already said, they can't cancel order because sky have requested to take the line over from them.load of rubbish IMHO. Trying to get a cheaper deal has cost me more!

BT are sneaky bastards with their billing, take your eye off the ball and they will add on call plans without telling you. They also make their bills purposely difficult to understand in the hope that you wont notice. They did this to me and i noticed within a few months, i then checked the bills of some elderly relatives and the bastards had chucked the lot on top of their bills for over 2 years. No chance of getting anywhere complaining either, keep well away as much as you can.
Mind you if it's that or contribute to the Murdoch empire..............

BT can F off in future. That's for sure. They were always putting the line rental up, and I was on a unlimited anytime phone package that was a rip off. Good riddance! Oh, and one of those phone calls I had the other day, they tried to offer me a better deal to cancel the sky deal that I had agreed. Why don't they offer you the deal in the first place? Shower of s---.

Stop the payment at the bank if you can and tell them you've changed your mind. I usually go to the top: the CEO's email is gavin.e.patterson@bt.com Tell him that unless this unfair fee is waived you will send your complaint to the consumer complaints desk at the Times and/or the Guardian or any other paper. Tell him Watchdog would also be interested in your story. Fight fire with fire - don't let the bastards off the hook. Good luck buddy

Ask them to produce the phone call as evidence Do this. I worked in a call centre once upon a time that was a major contractor for both Sky and BT. Most of the staff knew to unplug the audio line as soon as they logged in so they wouldnt be recorded. If the recordings couldnt be produced the company would always back down.

Exactly mate, if he didn't physically sign anything then the only basis for any contract here is the phone call, they have to produce it if there's a dispute, otherwise he wins, as there's no contract in force.

BT are fucking dog shit. They installed my internet and after doing a speed check i was getting faster internet on my 3g of my phone i was getting less than half a meg.
They sent 2 line engineers and a roadband engineer non of which could find a fault. I was without internet for 3 weeks and still paying full price. they sent another line engineer out who said it was an external fault with a wire that had corroded from the control box in the next street. even though the problem was external they tried to charge me for the call out. cheeky bastards sold me internet that didnt work and tried to charge me for them to fix a fault of theirs.
every call i got through was to some indian call center who was blatenly reading a script and knew fuck all it was dire from them. i ended up paying to end the contract with them and moved to virgin, much faster, much cheaper I just wish i went to virgin straight away and id never go back to BT again.

Perhaps BT are improving in some areas around Stoke now, I saw they were installing a fair bit of new cabling last summer but my old man has been with Sky, BT and others and doesn't live far from me and has never had more than 10% of the advertised 20Mb/s bandwidth. Can't be doing with it, especially not when I'm with Virgin and I'm disappointed if my 100Mb/s connection is running at less than 120Mb/s.
