Was chuffed to see Whelan taking on the captains armband yesterday and performing so well.
He deserves a new contract and I hope he gets one.
What a signing he's been for us.

Given what we paid for him and what he has contributed he's probably one of the best signings in the history of SCFC

Wasn't aware we're messing about with his contract. I called the Captaincy and I'm glad to see him respond so well after a horrible game last week. He's really responded under Hughes.

I was thinking about this the other day. We paid pretty much exactly the same money for Whelan as we did for Cranson in 1989.

It's clear from his game now that it was due to the constraints under Tony.

Not to mention the fact in recent years we have lost some leaders from the squad , Higgy , Salic , ric, Rory , and possibly huth . We need to keep the ones we still have, glen has the DNA of a Stokie

had this conversation numerous times with the whelan haters, watch him play for the roi, then compare that player to the one we had playing for us, he was shackled to defensive halfway line duties, he's been pound for pound an absolutepiss take of a signing for us, should be given a contract right now

'Whelan upgrade' was one of the standard cliches of this message board. He has proved that what we actually need is just to get him signed up again - and rapidly.

Later it was said that the actual fee was 500k euros (£460k ish). SLP said with agents fees and extras total deal was 1.3m which if the transfer fee was 460k adds about right.

I like Glen and would certainly offer him another 2-year-deal, but despite this I think this is one of the positions we should try to upgrade next season. When we meet mediocre teams Glen is fine, but when we play the better teams away I actually think he shows we could do better. Take the Arsenal game away where he was probably our worst player of the day. He is a bit slow, isn't creative enough and never scores a goal any longer. Anyway a very good squad player, but a player like Delph at Villa would certainly be an upgrade the way I see it.

Glenn Whelan has been a much better player for Stoke City than many have given him credit for. He wasn't responsible for his form under Pulis, not allowed to play his natural game. Was a good player for Sheffield Wednesday and we paid £500,000 for him. Been one of our most under-rated players. Well done Glenn, get him signed up Stoke.

Brilliant turnaround from last week's stinker. He was my man of the season last season, the way he adapted to MH's new style of play and improved and had a great second half to the season. Certainly deserves a new contract.
On the other side of the coin, he was playing against pretty rubbish opposition yesterday compared with the Arsenal forwards, N'Zonzi also stepped up to the mark yesterday, and if Stoke are to progress, it is one of the positions where we need to be stronger.
This is one of the conundrums we face if Stoke are to be an established top half Prem. side. Whelan is your man if you want a cheap, reliable middle of the table player, who will put in good performances against lower ability sides. But if you want to be striving to win a cup, or be an established top ten side, Whelan will struggle against top class opposition and we need someone with N'Zonzi's ability with the ball, a good tackler, and Whelan's attitude. Wilson and Cameron are not up to it IMO, and like others I would like to see Muniesa tried in this role.

When people bring up the likes of Palacios as a stick the beat the old regime, Glenn is one of those beacons that should be used to highlight how good we could be in the market as well.
One if the unsung heroes of a golden age for us

I'll always have doubts about Whelan and his footballing ability but it would be far from sensible to let him go. Saying that, we should always be looking to get in better players.

every player at every club could be " upgraded" thats the nature of the game, some of our lot need to get a reality check, were a mid table side, that means mid table players, occasionally u drop on a gem, but the cream of the players will always go to the " elite" clubs. players like delph etc would never consider a move to stoke, he has spurs and liverpool chasing him,... fabregas would be an upgrade too, but i dont think he'd consider coming here either......lets keep it real eh?
