Im hoping theres a waiter in the Eko Hotel, Lagos that now has a soft spot for Stoke. I was staying there last year and all the taxi drivers etc are all insane for Arsenal or Chelsea, so i never fail to sport the colours or engage in banter with them. I was watching a Stoke game on my laptop and had ordered a star beer and evening meal sent to the room. This guy turned up and was obviously a football fan and asked me why I was watching the Stoke game on the computer when I could be watching Arsenal live on the TV. I told him I was from Stoke hence supported my local team - a concept which was lost on him. He said "yes but if you watch the Arsenal game you will see more goals". I then sat him down and gave him a lecture on loyalty and fanbases, although I could see it was not registering. He looked at me completely blank and seemed keen to scuttle off back to the kitchen, no doubt where they had the Arsenal match on full blast. He was lagos born and bred but supported Arsenal and then Brazil at national level, Brazil because they 'win things and play nice football'. When I asked if he went to watch his local team in action nearby he literally laughed out loud for about 5 minutes. Other than his football blind spot he was a nice guy so I gave him 3 back issues of Duck Magazine (bobble hats now on sale) which is always a good way to introduce non natives to the gallows humour of the city and inhabitants. I normally carry a few around with me to dish out once ive read them.I hope some of it has stuck. If I ever have the misfortune to go back, ill look him up.

My girlfriends Dad and her brother (from Sao Paulo, Brazil) are both proud owners of Stoke shirts, the dad rarely takes it off his back it seems and watches our games on TV regularly. In return I have about three Palmeiras shirts.

I gave a Stoke shirt to a lad we used to employ in the kitchen of our cafe some years ago, here on a little island in the middle of the Philippines. Thought he'd be chuffed with it, maybe he was, didn't show it,(emotions like that are scarce here) he still wears it nowadays so good on Asics that it lasted so long but doubt very much that he follows Stoke!! On the other hand, i've some friends here from Austria, Switzerland, Germany and the occasional Filipino who keep themselves bang up to date with the goings on at Stoke, following the results and cup draws etc; Nice to think I've spread the word a little bit! (Similarly I now also check out how St. Gallen are doing in the Swiss league) What little island in the middle of the Philippines? Siquijor?

my dad's from ireland -- his dad played for charlton as a keeper so he always worshipped keepers, especially gordon banks and that was the beginning of his stokie life. i inherited it from him, i'm one of the few people in nyc (born and raised) who support stoke
