It was absolutely bizarre.
I remember even before the game watching a group of about 9-10 Grimsby fans getting run off 2 Stoke lads - probably because one of them had an iron bar.
They did look like the kind of lads that would be in a mob though and so it was pretty funny yet pathetic to see.
Think I was about 14/15 at the time.....some of their fans starting attacking a small group of our fans in the corner that contained kids and OAPs where most of our lot were caged in. As soon as our main lot got out though they soon sorted the grimsby fans out.
That is how I remember it but i'm not great at remembering the finer details.
can't even remember the result - was it 1-1?

Walking back to our car we got follwed by about 20 Grimsby who were just about to kick the shit our of us when we made it back. My mate (a pipe fitter) opened the boot to an array of monket wrenches and large spanners and we literally got 'tooled up' and four of us chased 20 back down the street.
We finished it all off with fish and chips and ice cream in Cleethorpes
Happy days

Didn't the gate in the fence get forced open and that's why we all ended up on the pitch? That's my excuse anyway!

Don't know what it was all about but probably everything to do with just how much it was kicking off everywhere outside too.
Oh, and been on that pitch was bloody good too.

Ah the good old days!!
When you could go rollin round on a pitch with someone and if you didn't get nicked on the day then you didn't get nicked at all. Young uns today don't know how unlucky they are

It was kicking off everywhere that day. Remember the lad in the red England shirt in the ground too. You beat me to it there, I was just about to mention the dickhead in the red England shirt, he was sat in the paddock to the right of us, he beat a hasty retreat once Stoke fans got down to business. There's a few that post on here who can be seen making an appearance on the video (no names, no pack drill and all that), you know who you are

The highlight of that day for me was when walking with my mates they turned right to go to the ground 'reason for this was because they didn't notice those lads' whereas I carried straight on wading straight into four of their lads throwing punches and headbuts.
It was mental.

Yeah it was a funny day.
As I remember it we got there early and found a pub down the bottom end of the main road. As the day wore on quite a few Stokies came into the pub saying they've had some trouble with the locals, all saying the same thing that they were massivly outnumbered Grimsby were basicly ambushing Stokies when there was only 4-5 of them. Word went around the pub that we were all going to leave together and see what they'd do when it was equal numbers. There must of been 200 Stoke who left the pub together, it was absolute carnage. Grimsby got smashed all over the place. There was running battles up and down the road for about 30 minutes.
That video footage was only about 20% of what went on outside the ground.

There was a cracking atmosphere throughout the match. The lad in in the England shirt was sat to the right in the group of Grimbsy that came onto to the pitch to gloat after the final whistle. We were crap that day and it was the beginning of the end for Ball.
As I remeber it, as they approached one Stoke fan (with ginger hair who gets nicked) forced the gate. This was followed by others who eventually forced the police to open it. The rest can be seen on the video. I think most the fghting was outside of the ground to be fair.
As young 15 year old I found the whole day quite an experience.

Having watched about 3 minutes it brings to mind an episode of 'One man and his dog', with a bunch of unruly sheep being badly rounded up by a load of dogs. Still, boys will be boys…...

Excellent stuff. You really got your moneys worth back then didn't you?
Today if the game is not up to scratch you are not really left with much else other than to take it squarely on the chin from the discomfort of your plastic seat.

I didn't go the game but remember Animal telling me about this the week after.
Some lads ran out of a pub and tried to beat him with a pool cue-he made his excuses and left.

2 mini bus loads of us got there at 11am.Outside the ground before KO it was a bit mental. One of us got nicked and was locked up all weekend and appeared in court on the Monday, bringing home with him a copy of their local paper. He rang me to tell me I was on the front page walking off the pitch and he gave me the paper.Still got it somewhere I think. He didn't even see the game. Before the game I got my head cut open by a police horse charging through us fighting outside a pub right by the ground (I dont have much luck with police horses to tell you the truth) Loads of proper faces there. No 'pavement dancers' just jumping up and down like todays 'Football factory' generation.Everybody waded in,a proper steaming. We were packed in behind the goal during the game.We were standing to the right near to there little mob in the seats, and as stated above, the lad in the red England top was gobbing off all game. When the whistle went they invaded the pitch and came up to the fence goading us and throwing coins.I was hanging on a gate and the fence was rocking with stokies trying to bring it down or get over it.They thought they were safe with a fence and a police presence. They weren't! The police couldnt hold the gate back, and that was it, we were on. Everyone was dying to get there hands on the lad in the red England top,I don't know if anybody did because 90% fled like scared rabbits. Some were caught, some stood and fought, they were even running up the players tunnel on the half way line.It was a great day.If it happened today with better CCTV etc I think there would of been record arrests. We stopped off in Derby on the way home for a couple then made our way home.I was aching like Fck the next day when I got up to play football.Happy days, they don't know what they're missing today

My memory of it was seeing a small boy - maybe 10 years old - being knocked over & trampled on by Stoke fans as they went onto the pitch.
still as long as the lads had fun who cares?
