There is no way this is commentary is from the ground. Sounds like he's doing it from his kitchen.
I've noticed it before with his commentary. Sounds like he's knows what's about to happen. He often points out the player whos going to be involved in the action before they get the ball.

I think he watches it and commentates from a studio later in the day

I hate the bloke. Always sounds like you're watching fifa or something with clichés all over the shop.

I believe that the official line is that the commentary is recorded live in real time but they are allowed to go back and rercord some segments in case of errors or to fit the edit.
Jonathan Pierce has to be the worst for unrealistically prophetic commentary.

Additional thought - you never hear the motd commentators say something like "only one team is going to win it now" followed by the other team running up to the other end and scoring ala Kevin Keegan circa 1998.

Prophetic commentary - perfect description......straight out of the seventies......
Motson is a complete London centric BBC twat with full on luvvie status - heard him jizzing over Kane a couple of times - quite sickening......

John Motson in his heyday was a...shit commentator.
He's gone downhill since then.
One of those commentators who think that his commentary is more important than the football.

Being one of the weirdos who don't have a compulsive urge to dish out vitriolic abuse and loathe and detest everything and everybody however harmless they might be.... I like Motty. He's a lovable loony. Bit eccentric. Nowt wrong with that.

Never liked his commentary or his love of the big clubs or pundits love in with him, all a bit sickly for me.

Always wondered what the noise in the background was, must listen to the commentary some time. Useful for player identification but otherwise distracting waffle.

One of his more with stupid statements was in one game he gets all excited and states " Did you see that" . Hes on a TV with a camera following it all and he asks if youve seen it. His other classics were when a "big" team went a goal behind hed remind you how ten years earlier this happened and they came back to win.

Miserable lot on here who think the world is against them! He's fine, he might be a bit mental but at-least he shows some enthusiasm.
When people like Motson retire you'll be wishing he was back as you have to suffer listening to fucking Michael Owen or Phil Neville.

My criticism is aimed towards the BBC and its production approach.
These dubbed commentaries just sound so fake and contrived.

One thing I've always found endearing about John Motson is he wears his heart on his sleeve and clearly unquestionably openly proudly loves football. I know plenty of the other media football people do too but Motson's enthusiasm and knowledge are a big plus to him.
