I've been one of his critics in the past and, to be fair, I think all I said at the time was fair comment/opinion. However, as I said on another thread last week, I absolutely give him massive credit for his performances both last season and this and he has EARNED a new contract. I hope he gets it because he's become a very important part of our team/squad.

He really played extremely well off of injury doing what he does best, tackling and passing. Nothing more, nothing less. I like the new options we have at the club to be honest. Want graft and tackling? Whelan. You want Possession and Position? Sidwell. You want Possession and Counters? Nzonzi. You want Counters and Dribbling? Cameron. We have a strong midfield squad to choose from really. Love when someone comes back like this.

He's a loyal Stokie, spent so long under Pulis being used wrong, he definitely deserves a new contract and is one of the first names on the team sheet for me, we have looked a bit shaky lately, Glen comes back in to the team and we keep a clean sheet against a team we've always struggled against, he's not the only reason but he's a big part of it

Whelan as the holding player makes us tick - he is not a great player, but we play better when he is playing, shielding the back 4, harrying and hassling, getting in important tackles and interceptions and starting attacks with simple balls to feet. The interception that Bojan messed up early on, (damn, he is human after all!!), that was Whelan personified in 5 seconds of football. Welcome back, Glenn, we have missed your diligence and intelligent positional play.

Had a belter today along with Arnie. Top efforts H Couldn't go today,so Arnie played well? Arnie ran his 'nads off, and covered Coleman manfully (just as SJW did with Baines). He did not contribute a match-winning moment in the final third, but his effort and commitment was there for all to see. His attitude has sometimes been questionable, but not today - he put in a full shift.

Let's not go back to the pluses and minuses of Pulis's reign here but, it has to be said, he's much more suited to the current set up. He's been pretty impressive this past 18 months and I hope we resign him.

It's a team game and the contribution of blokes like Whelan is every bit as valuable as other more flamboyant ones. Slowly but surely I think everyone is cottoning on to this. It's a shame that injuries have stopped HUghes getting the balance he is looking for for most of this season. Hopefully Whelan's contract situation will be sorted sensibly recognising the contribution he makes and we won't be making some feeble offer just because he is over 30 and that's our new 'rule' !

Having criticised him in the past, I'm delighted that he's made himself such an important player to the team. I really do give him a great deal of credit.

If we had paid £10 million for some beast of a holding midfielder from the continent with an exotic name who made his debut for us today, then we'd all be currently lauding that debut today.

Do you know what I like best about Whelan?
I think in every season he's been here, he hasn't really been the managers first choice starter. Every season we've signed someone who threatens his place yet every season he's won the battle, played great and been first choice comfortably come the seasons end.
All this week we've had talk about this Barcelona hotshot midfielder joining us and Glenn comes back into the team and produces his best performance of the season.
What a character. What a player. I absolutely love Glenn Whelan. To coin a phrase of our ever popular ex-manager, he's bloody triffic!

He just keeps bouncing back stronger from every setback. A broken leg pissed him off for a few weeks but he comes back as good as ever. A top class pro and well worthy of a decent contract offer.
