Not actually the first, John. He was given a special achievement award at the BBC Midlands Community Sports evening. Just out of interest Malcolm, what for? He was giving an award and then they sprung the special award ( presented by Lou Macari) on him as a surprise at the end of the evening. I can't remember exactly what was said, but I guess it was for achieving what he has in life and sport despite his "difficulties". Perhaps it was for winning Neil Baldwin FC Player of the season for 42 successive seasons

I note on The Mirror site that in the poll at he bottom of the article 92% think Nello should be knighted. Let's hope the Queen or David Cameron read The Mirror.

Didn't realise Freddie Jones was Toby Jones old man.
Genuine Stoke connection.

Shit rag of a newspaper and editor. Or are the goalposts moved now they have said something nice about one of own???? I'm totally with you on that, but regardless it was a fucking great production and extremely well done. The fact that those cunts in that shit rag have had to give it the credit it deserves makes it all the sweeter. You can almost see the gritted teeth. H

I don't know what your objection is to the Daily Mirror is but whatever it may be the award is not from that particular newspaper so far as I can tell. It appears to have come from the Sports Journalists' Association for which the person writing the article in the Mirror happens to be the Chairman. That is how I read it anyway.

Every time I watch that clip of Lou with Nello in the background as a Jock makes it me laugh. I hope he gets an Oscar never mind a BAFTA. Gouranga.

Having watched some of the Oscars (obviously just to earn credit for a few more MOTDs and Goals on Sundays....honest) it's good to know that genuinely great filmmaking is being recognized and rewarded.
The more awards the better. A piece of art that will retain it's value and power for decades.
And a man who will be recognized and celebrated even longer.
Well done (again) to all involved. A credit to you all and to the man himself.

The Potteries accent is one of the most difficult of all for a non-local to pull off and Toby Jones did a decent job. I suppose it helped that his dad is from these parts, although Toby is not. I don't remember ever hearing anyone do a decent imitation of a Stoke accent on TV or film.

Next time you feel the need to abuse me from behind your computer screen can you at least write it in English please. Or if you like I can arrange some English lessons for you,as my soon to be wife is a primary school teacher.

I'm really pleased that Pete B. has won this. I suppose it's always the case but as the writer I don't think he's had enough credit, compared with the actors. After all, all the lines, whether funny, sad or philosophical, which they say are all his. And the idea of having the real Neil talking with Toby and the real Lou talking to the real Neil in the film was genius. Roll on the BAFTAs in May !
