What a signing from TP. He was a big factor in us staying up, establishing ourselves in the league and also showing we could attract relatively big name players too.
Him and Penant were a joy to watch when they were on form in the cup final season in particular.

It's been on the cards for a while now. Bloody brilliant for those couple of seasons running up to the cup season and never the same since Wolves crogged him.

Fucking quality player he was. Would love to know how far he could have gone if THAT injury never happened. He was on fine form.

Another great Stoke player criminally ignored by the England manager of the day.

You have to take your hat off to TP and the rest of the team/back room staff for the way they handled Matty. Took him from a dark place to the best form of his career. A real shame that he got that injury when he did, he really did have the chance of making the engalnd set up

For me he was one of those players that you don't see on a regular basis (playing for Stoke). He was the player that when he received a ball, you almost held your breath, you knew something good was coming.
I remember a game (I can't remember which one) when he had run the ball up the line all match and put great crosses in - with no result. Just at the moment I was thinking, "He's getting fed up with this, he's going to shoot himself" - that is exactly what happened - goal.
I have watched Stoke since the "old" Stoke team, Hudson, Conroy, Greenhoff & Co. I reckon Matty was as good a winger (if not better) as any, that have played for Stoke. He was that good.
Best of luck Matty.

He's one of the reasons we're still in the prem. He was absolute quality on his day and one of my all time favourite Stoke players.

Another great Stoke player criminally ignored by the England manager of the day. Was he overlooked in the "Downing plays for Liverpool" days? I'm sure he was getting selected during a season when he scored no goals and delivered no assists.

One of the best wingers in my time watching Stoke BUT there is no denying he was very very poor for the last 2 seasons at Stoke.

Another great Stoke player criminally ignored by the England manager of the day. Bloody Jarvis of Wolves picked ahead of him. I remember after we played Arsenal in the Cup and Peter Reid was on the highlights show that night. You may recall that it was Sol Campbell's big comeback game. The presenter, possibly Gabriel Clarke, said 'so Peter, should Sol Campbell be back in the England squad?', to which Reid replied, 'if you're looking for England players today, why not Matty Etherington?' 'Hahaha, no, but seriously, should he?' 'I'm being serious, he's been outstanding this season!' 'Well ok whatever then, moving on...' Sums it all up really. The squad is determined by the media agenda of the day.

Wish we still had someone as good at taking corners as Matty. Even though he did the same inswinger every time we still looked dangerous from almost every ball in.

Absolute hero. Had he avoided that fateful injury v Wolves I reckon we'd be sitting here with an FA Cup in the cabinet.
Thanks for the memories Matty.
