"Experienced signing Keith Bertschin has spent seven months attempting to fit into his new club's tactical system," wrote The Sentinel in the build-up to a Boxing Day home match against Manchester United, "and he emerged from (a 2-1 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday) accepting it does not exist." Stoke archive report and photo.Who was there?

I remember having my leg in plaster and thinking if it kicked off I'd be ok because no one would hit anyone with there leg in plaster. Wrong,I got as far as Glebe Street. Bastards.

Sorry to be pedantic, but that photo isn't Painter's goal against Man Utd.

Well, Steve Foster is clearly visible there in his headband, so I'd say it's a goal in the FA Cup replay against Luton a few weeks later.
And yes, Painter was a forward.

Not pedantic, I should've noticed. Painter actually has three almost identical photos hanging up in his house, penalties against Arsenal, Man U and Luton. Here's the Man U one...

Carl Saunders scored both goals that day one of which was a penalty And it never snowed so that picture is wrong on so many counts Painter scored the penalty.

I was there. I was only a little kiddie. And I can honestly say, I can’t remember one single thing about the day / game at all. (Apart from we won 2-1).

I remember thinking I would never be able to get over it and was this the start of our comeback, the season before we just stayed up having had a good second half to the season.
However, Robbie James, formerly of Stoke and then QPR, put paid to that a few days later. he spend years putting shots just over the bar to the point where nobody bothered 'oooooing' anymore, and then typical Stoke, he buries one on his return and we lost 2-0.
That day I knew we were doomed even though I hoped without a reason we could scrape back into contention.
I had a 16k ram pack for my ZX81 that year and played football manager all through xmas:)
