Boredom waiting for the proper football to return and in the hope of signing Moses permanently has brought to mind the various loan deals we have done over the years. I am sure there are many who will have made varying impressions on other posters but the two short lists below consist of those who have left indelible marks in my mind. To qualify, all have returned to their parent club and have never been a permanent signing for Stoke City in their career.
Best:
Hendrie Crossley Biley Grobbelaar Assaidi
I have omitted Victor for the time being hoping that he is disqualified from the list due to making a full time switch.
Worst:
Segers Ebanks Pressman Southall Whitehurst Whitley
Nearly 50% of those named are keepers, the significance of which I am not sure.
Feel free to add, argue for or against.

Alan Smart would take some beating for the worst.

Crossley was an inspired bit of genius by Pulis, saved our necks that year without a doubt so has to be one of the best. Worst? Probably Berger, not worst in quality but because Pulis didn't know what the hell to do with him.

Shawcross is disqualified from either list - only those who never signed on permanently for Stoke are eligible.

Alan Smart ha, didn't he nut someone whilst playing for us? Forgot about him...he went on to sign for Oldham only days after getting sent off for Stoke against them.

Alan Smart would take some beating for the worst. Got sent off against Oldham on his home debut I think and then signed for them a few weeks later.

One of the most important asside from Crossely as someone else has mentioned would have to be Deon Burton I'd say.

I couldn't give a shiny shit, he's the best! Fair enough. How about the worst loan to become permanent?

I couldn't give a shiny shit, he's the best! Fair enough. How about the worst loan to become permanent? I'm only messing but since you asked my lazy but controversial answer is Danny Pugh or Leon Cort. I never could abide either of them defensively and I don't care how good servants or what goals they scored! Paul Gallagher from his first loan deserves a good mention for one of the best. Marton Fulop for one of the worst. Shola Ameobi too, 500k for that!

Of the ones not already mentioned, Arnar Gunnlaugsson (or however it was spelt) the original Arnie. Especially his first loan in 2000 when he was electric and I was absolutely gutted we couldn't get the money together to sign him permanently. I remember Paul Allen having a good loan spell with us in the mid 90s and was a bit gutted he didn't sign.
Worst loans Allan Smart and Tosh McKinlay instantly come to mind. Both got sent off on their debut and never played again. I have a feeling Gordon Marshall was a loan too, if so he has to be the worst in terms of quality. The second half of the 97/98 contained a succession of dreadful loans under Kamara. O'Neill Donaldson, Tony Scilly, Jorg Sobiech, Paul Holsgrove, sure there we're more. All absolutely terrible.

There were a few very poor loans in the Boskamp era from what I remember.
Junior and Martin Kolar immediately spring to mind.

Lou's goalkeeping loan signings were usually either a thing of beauty or complete fucktardary. Grobbelaar was a bit of an unnecessary luxury, but seemed a decent attempt to raise our profile. Kearton was excellent and joined a long list of players we should have signed but couldn't afford to. Then there were the ones that didn't work out, although luckily at the time, the quality of our defence meant we barely needed a keeper - Kevin Pressman was the worst of a bad bunch. He was going to be be the next-but-one England keeper, but he was that bad for us, if Roy had been England manager at the time, he wouldn't have picked him even if Lineker ordered him to. That Autoglass Trophy match against Peterborough . . .

Did Tommy Mooney not also do an Allan Smart, appearing once and then getting sent off?
TP's first spell seemed to feature a revolving door of average loan midfielders. Off the top of my head, Jarrret, Svard and Johnson (?) are three who came, didn't pull up many trees and left again. In that very first season he must have had about 20 different loan players.

Tosh McKinley for the worst, sent off on his debut wasn't he?
Mark Crossley as probably the best for being influential. Steino or Ryan would be up there but they signed permanently
