Key to our counter attacking style if you ask me, but this season we have just been nowhere near it seems that we are seriously lacking that ball winner in midfield. From the goal kicks to the defensive headers away we really do struggle winning the second ball anybody else noticed this? NZonzi and co seem scared to get up for them and put their head in when it matters. Is Sidwell the answer? Not saying he is but its certainly one to discuss.

We lost it a few years ago imo, before Pulis left in fact.

For yonks we have been hopeless with the second ball. For a side considered to be combative its crap.

thats where we have been going wrong, having two balls on the pitch is confusing the players, they don't know which ones to kick chase or throw.

Some established / consistent pairings would improve things imo

It was doing my swede in (and I was probably doing everybodies swede in round me moaning about it). All Southampton needed to do was lump the ball up top. I don't think they won a single ball but because Cameron and N'Zonzi were standing on the centre backs toes when they headed the ball clear it went to one of Saints 3 midfielders who were totally unmarked. We barely won a second ball in those circumstances all night. One of the defensive midfielders needs to drop and the other push forward a bit or just leave the two centre backs to mark the one forward and concentrate on marking their own man. The first goal was a direct result of the midfielders dropping far too deep and not pressing the man with the ball until it was too late.
