We all seem to know what our shortcomings are, but which players that are feasible signings will make us a better side in the new year?

A top class central defender, central midfielder and a frontline striker. Apart from that we're ok

Being serious, I still think scoring goals is our main problem. Well it IS our main problem.
If we're struggling for wins, I'd suggest we'll need to spend big on a striker. Or strike it lucky and hope someone is daft enough to give us Odemwingie mkII!

A Strong first team quality CB which will cost a minimum of £3 million pounds. A PL proven CAM wouldn't hurt either but the most important thing is that the squad needs to shoot!

Mats Hummels Xabi Alonso Edison Cavani That should sort it. This is getting ridiculous now. When will people realise the situation we're in and that we can't afford to waste money on players of Xabi Alonso's age.

Realistically speaking I suppose it depends upon whether we lose anyone in the window {and if we know early enough not to have to resort to last minute desperation.}
I don't reckon we will be looking much beyond permanent deals for Moses and/or Assaidi and then a loan punt in the space that creates, for a domestic forward. {On fantasy Island that would be Bolotelli, Benteke or Carroll.} But wouldn't be overly surprized if the mystical Agudelo shows up too, in an Odemwingie kind of way? {There'll be a Hollywood Blockbuster about how the boy from the MLS saved Potteries Nogger and the World.}

I wouldn't be at all surprised if we didn't have another go for Cattermole. For me, I'd like to see us go after Ashley Westwood. Cracking player, right age and can play deep or higher up. Scores the odd goal too. We need a partner for Ryan too but that may be for next summer.

A CB, DM and target man. Who?
CB - Grant Hanley DM - Lucas Leiva - Can't get a game at the mo. Obtainable? I'd say yes and only 27, Wanyama - not an automatic starter. STR - Traore though he's more of a winger or Yarmolenko

Moses on a permanent deal.
Matija Nastasic, doesn't seem to be a starter at Man City, 4th choice behind Kompany, Demichelis and Mangala.
I'd say go for McDonald Mariga from Inter, an absolute powerhouse but I've no idea of his current fitness, seems to be blighted at the moment.

Centre half (left footed) - with proven premier league experience and, a centre forward again, with proven premier league expereince

Yarmolenko or equivalent A centre mid (Leiva is a good shout) A decent centre back (hanley again is a good shout)
We could afford that given we've spent nothing. Maybe a shock exit of someone like Adam or Huth.
Wait to get a striker in the summer. When we will need to have a serious think of who's good enough to push on and who isn't. We still need to cut the squad size down

My amended post from an earlier thread:
1. Transfers in: 1.1. Stoke's continuing major weakness is lack of goals. Naturally it would be nice to sign a striker who will guarantee goals, but they are few and far between and invariably beyond Stoke's budget in terms of transfer fee and/or wages. Nowadays it seems the agents share can be a block to a purchase. IMO Stoke are prepared to spend big money for the right player but not bust the pay policy and upset the whole squad. Other clubs have succeeded at buying successful goal scorers, Stoke need to follow suit. How about Andre-Pierre Gignac, Britt Assombalonga, or could MH persuade Carlos Tevez to rejoin him?!
1.2. Signing Moses should be a priority.
1.3. If Stoke can get Yamalenko that would be brilliant, and Assaidi could be released. He may be going back anyway.
1.4. Naturally if Hughes and the club are aware of any potential bargain signings who would strengthen the squad then they should be signed up as Stoke are facing keen competition for players and do not have the pulling power of other clubs in terms of money, European football, big following, etc. But IMO strengthening the squad is not a major issue now, the priority is to get better first choice players and in Stoke's situation that is best done by developing our own either from the academy, or purchasing players from lower leagues, or top clubs surplus young players.
2. Transfers Out: 2.1. Palacios
2.2. If 1.1 above can be achieved then Crouch or Walters could be sold if the price is right. Each has their particular qualities which would be missed, but the objective is to improve the team and there is no sense on having ageing players sitting on the bench who could bring in revenue.
2.3 One of the toughest decisions that the MH management team have to make is who to let go, whom they have purchased. It's hard to admit you made a mistake. IMO their acquisitions since they took over have not been a roaring success apart from Odemwingie and Bardsley. Where they can take credit is the improvement in form and improved utilization of players like Whelan, Adam, N'Zonzi, and Wilson and the continued excellent performances of Begovic, Shawcross, and Crouch. However I think it is still too early to be moving on the recent acquisitions; maybe next summer if they fail to make major contributions later this season.
2.4. Finally, we have to recognize that the big clubs may come fishing for our best players. Naturally the club is going to say they are not for sale, but the reality is that everyone has a price and it would be churlish to stand in the way of a player who wants to play at the top level, i.e. European Champions League. I just hope Stoke have players locked into long contracts they will ensure good revenue to buy out.

Hughes doesn't seem too sure on who his best 11 are and given injuries he's not been able to consistently put the same team out.
For me I'd actually do nothing unless the opportunity to sign Ronaldo for 3 mill came up or failing that we could agree a fee for Moses.
Signing another winger would push one of Moses or Diouf out the team and push Arnie and Assaidi further down the pecking order so unless we sold Arnie or terminated Assaidi's loan then we're bloating the squad with more unhappy players.
I think Crouch has been playing okay upfront since he came back into the team and as its been said multiple times elsewhere his link up play has been good.
We're heavily stocked in the centre midfield department so unless we're planning on selling who can we buy?
We're missing consistency at the moment and spending money cant guarantee we'll get any.

I would like to see...
Moses signed up permanently - this one does not need explaining. Jordan Rhodes - The boy is untested at this level, but he is big, powerful and knows where the net is. I reckon he is capable of 10-15 a season at this level providing he gets the right service. Yarmolenko - Can either play up top or can play out on the left, which would give us options across our back line. He is left-footed too, which could add some variation to our play. Nastasic - A fringe player at best at Man City. Still young as well, so could develop into a fine, fine centre half in time. Would work well with Shawcross. Also left footed, so would provide balance to our back line when playing the ball out.
