Anyone recall Denis Smith getting sent off away to Burnley (???) for going off the pitch and coming back on without permission? Or am I just getting senile? Mcnally is back .................

Was listening to Talkshite in work and they said Shawcross was asked to leave the pitch to put his boots on, he refused and did it on the pitch so he was booked. Ref should've just played on.

You can still waste time, you'd just be a bit stupid to do it

He was booked but I though it was for time wasting even though we were one down at the time. I don't think McNally reffed another game after that.

I assume it was because the ref told him to go off the pitch and he ignored him, can't complain really - especially when the ref allowed him plenty of time to try and sort his boot out a few minutes. I think you've got it. Shortly before he had just given Ryan quite a lot of latitude with the boot, much to the annoyance of the home crowd and the Ston players. When it happened again, the ref. pointed to Ryan to go off the pitch, but he just carried on putting the boot on. A soft booking by any standards, and the ref. perhaps didn't need to produce a card, but it's taking a chance to just ignore the ref. in that way, a chance which central defenders, who pick up more cards than others, shouldn't ever take. Ryan would certainly have regretted it if he had picked up another yellow in the game. It could have been for unsporting conduct, dissent or delaying the restart of play, all of which are cautionable offences under law 12. We musn't always assume that top refs. don't know the laws of the game or give cards for no reason.
