What about Wilfred Bony at Swansea? A tad expensive maybe, but exactly the kind of player I would like us to have up front!

What about Wilfred Bony at Swansea? A tad expensive maybe, but exactly the kind of player I would like us to have up front! Good shout, except that Swansea will likely have a decent season and he won't feel the need to move to Stoke. He'll see it as a sidewards step. Looks like it will need to be someone from abroad. I don't see many candidates from the domestic league. Dzeko or Zlatan maybe?

I thought big target men, clunking assault towers of the penalty area, were no longer relevant in our Bojan-geared short passing attack? Kind of like recruiting a heavy metal guitarist in to a classical orchestra And I guess there's every chance that that eventuality might actually materialise. Sometimes things materialise more by accident than design, indeed when you consider that Diouf and Bojan we're starting at the start of the season and Crouch wasn't, then it's not unreasonable to suggest that's how we've got to where we are now. Lord knows where we'll be in 12 months time and I think that the OP is possibly jumping the gun somewhat. I'm not so sure. Going into this season, there has never really been any indication that Hughes intends to do anything other than start out with a target man, asides from half (?) a pre-season friendly with Bojan up front. The only reason that Crouch wasn't playing was because Diouf was playing in that role, but it has since turned out that he's better suited to playing alongside a big target man. We don't look overly keen to completely remove the direct element from our game and to be honest, I hope that we don't, as it's another string to have to our bow.

Yeah, Coates is going to sanction £25million. Plus why would he come here?
While we're talking out of our arses what about Zlatan?

Sheffield Wednesday have a 25 year old Austrian of Kosovo ancestry who at 6ft 6ins is almost a carbon copy of Crouch - although probably not as prolific! The Kosovan Crouch!

For those advocating Martin from Derby, I do wonder whether you've got him mixed up with someone else! He's always looked poor when I've seen him and lacks any sort of pace (yes, I know Crouch has none). I feel that we've ended up with how we set up at the moment because of Odemwingie's injury and upon realising that Diouf won't lead the line, not to mention not knowing what to do with Bojan. Crouch has been excellent but I can't see how he's the future and, like the OP, I'm concerned at the lack of an alternative. Wingie is out for the season so with Moses and Diouf seemingly nailed on with Crouch as a front three it makes you wonder what we do in the Big Man's absence, not to mention when Diouf goes off in the New Year.

Not really a target man, but are we still pursuing Yarmolenko?
How far off the main squad is James Alabi?
Surely we are actively scouting for another forward with the ACN probably taking away Moses and Diouf
Good idea to keep any targets below the radar - I think that many of us were pleasantly surprised when we signed Moses on loan.

Get scouting at the ACN to see if there is a big "Drogba-lite" forward who could come in. Demba Ba was ideal, until his knees threw our docs into a convulsion and blew the deal. They are about, but trying to buy English is doomed, given the overpriced and average fare on offer.

This is a bit of a left-field option, but what about Matt Smith, who has gone to Fulham? Hes a big lump, can hold the ball up well, plus he scored 12 in 42 for Leeds last season. On paper, that record isn't super-impressive, but he is relatively young (25) and probably would not demand a huge transfer fee, especially if Fulham continue to struggle.

What is James Alabi like? I've heard him talked about on here and it all seems positive. I don't know if he's a target man, I've just heard he is a forward. Maybe it's time to try one of the kids.

Matt, the point is, Hughes doesn't profess to be after a big lump though and we've moved on since. I don't class someone like Bony as the type of big lump you mean as he has pace and movement to complement two other fast forwards.

Matt, the point is, Hughes doesn't profess to be after a big lump though and we've moved on since. I don't class someone like Bony as the type of big lump you mean as he has pace and movement to complement two other fast forwards. To move on from Crouch, we need pace, power and movement in a front man: think of a young Drogba, or Lukaku. Diouf could yet settle into the role, but he does look happier playing off another front man who holds the ball up, to bring him into the play to use his pace off the shoulder of the defender. Somebody like Mbokani may fit the bill, from the sound of this: "The goals haven’t flown in at Dynamo Kiev quite as regularly as they did at Anderlecht, but Dieumerci Mbokani remains one of Africa’s deadliest frontmen. In many ways he is the complete package; he is powerful and provides an attacking presence, yet at the same time he has an excellent turn of pace and knows how to knock the ball past defenders and beat them on the ground. He can also create goals as well; Mbokani made five assists and scored once during Dynamo’s 9-1 thrashing of Metalurh Donetsk. He is reportedly unhappy with life in Ukraine and, particularly, the team’s rotation policy. Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move, and the time is right for the 28-year-old Mbokani to once more try his hand in one of Europe’s major leagues." Another one, I must admit to not knowing too much about, could be worth a look as well - Cheick Diabate: "Having earned his stripes with Ajaccio and Nancy, Cheick Diabate is now well-established as Bordeaux’s key man. He has a terrific scoring record with the Girondins and, in recent times, has forged an effective partnership with Senegalese winger Henri Saivet. He ended the Ligue 1 season on fire and regularly looked determined not simply to find the net but also to dominate contests and ensure victory for the Bordelais. One example was the French Cup final, when he scored twice against Evian to bring the trophy back to the Stade Chaban Delmas. At 6'4", he is a towering presence and offers a major physical threat. However, recently, his improving composure has added another element to his game."
