I'm guessing that a new target man is going to be the priority for the upcoming transfer window, or possibly the summer window depending on circumstances.
I'd initially thought that Diouf would come in as a replacement for Crouch and would play as the lead striker in our system, playing the same role as Crouch but adding physicality and pace. I think most people prior to the Villa game would have expected the front line to consist of some combination of Diouf, Bojan, Arnie and Ireland.
Since then, we've learned that Diouf looks more effective playing off a target man than operating as the target man and consequently seen Crouch reinstated. To give Crouch his due, he's been playing very, very well and is worth his place in the team. In a 4-3-3, where he's got rapid players flanking him, he's terrific and he brings the best out of the players around him.
The only problem is that to get the best out of the players we've got, he needs to be in the team and there's nobody who can take his place if he gets injured. Add to that that he's in the last 12 months of his contract and he's 34 years old and you've got to say that we need to look at bringing in a proper target man. The question is, who's out there that's both in our price range and up to the task?

I've heard this Rivière bloke is worth looking at, A audacious bid in Jan.

He's got no pace to lose so he could well cut it at our level for another year. Certainly if he carries on like this you would think he might be worth a one year extension. But maybe he would prefer two years somewhere down south if he could get it.

In terms of target man types domestically....
Big Daft Andy at a knockdown price? (mind you, if there's one manager who would keep him 'til the end of time, it's Big Sam despite them appearing to be doing much better without him)
Connor Wickham entering the last year of his deal and not rushing to re-sign there? (without watching him regularly, no idea if he's anything like the real deal?)
I'd certainly be giving Crouchy an extra year. There's nothing to suggest he's going to deteriorate rapidly given his physical make-up.

I get told on a regular basis how good a player he is and he is the link man for all of Derby's play.Whether he could cut it in the prem is another question but i reckon their fans will find out next season.

It's a fair shout, and something that crossed my mind last night. However, Crouchie seems to have more energy/verve/ enthusiasm than ever, given he now has some excellent support (?)- how old is that Totti fella?

I thought big target men, clunking assault towers of the penalty area, were no longer relevant in our Bojan-geared short passing attack? Kind of like recruiting a heavy metal guitarist in to a classical orchestra

Kind of like recruiting a heavy metal guitarist in to a classical orchestra And I guess there's every chance that that eventuality might actually materialise. Sometimes things materialise more by accident than design, indeed when you consider that Diouf and Bojan we're starting at the start of the season and Crouch wasn't, then it's not unreasonable to suggest that's how we've got to where we are now. Lord knows where we'll be in 12 months time and I think that the OP is possibly jumping the gun somewhat.

Crouch will get another year I'm sure but it's a good question as to who would replace him if he were to get injured. I think we've learned that Diouf is not a target man but I think if required we could play Walters behind Bojan, I reckon that'd work.

Yes, still plenty to come from the Crouchbot yet, eventually I'd like him to move into our coaching/Academy/Management set up. Perhaps after a loan spell {abroad} to round his career off. There are games when he'll become isolated, dominated, used as a climbing frame or just plain knackered, and times when it may be prudent that he's rested/benched in Cup games.
I wonder if Arnie could develop into a Crouch type target man. He can pluck a ball out of the air, hold it, recycle it, do an unfathomable trick, or skin a defender. Obviously he needs to sharpen his shooting boots, but he's good in the air, a strong battler, he can track back and nick a ball from deep etc. He smacked a beauty from a rebound last night that took a desperate scramble to keep out. With a clearer/closer site of goal there's more chance he'll start scoring a few. I'm sure I read that he'd played centrally at Bremen, the last time we tried him there his over all form wasn't great. A flexible front three of Moses Arnautovic Diouf could cause chaos. Would be strong and mobile enough to accomodate Ireland or Bojan around them. Maybe the answer lies within.

I reckon Huth would score more goals than Arnie as a target man, his shooting skills are about as good as mine.

I'm not convinced that we have to have a target man as such. Crouch is better with the ball at his feet or even chest height and as well as he is playing I wouldn't really want us to go back to whacking it up to a big target man. What we do need is someone who is big, powerful, lightning quick, who can hold the ball up,turn and run at players, who can finish with aplomb! Over to you Cartwright

I would definately keep Crouchy for another year. If he plays like this all season then I'd offer him 2. Even as a backup if he's getting on a bit. He certainly has the legs to carry on for another couple of years.
