Just watched the program pre League Cup footy, it really is phenomenal what Clough achieved there during what was a golden era of English football
To get promoted from Div 2 (1977), to then win the First Division (Prem) the next year, and then win 2 European Cups in successive years, the Euro Super Cup, a League Cup all in the space of 4 years is amazing and never ever to be repeated
He might have waned towards the end of his career, but Clough was an exceptional manager supported by Peter Taylor. On the program - the week before the second final, he took them to Majorca, told them no training, just go out and get pissed, have a good time, enjoy it, just be ready for the game! Cant imagine a manager now doing that lol with SSN following them around
Even Derby won the league with him in 72!
Also amazing that after he and Peter Taylor fell out, he only won 2 league cups from 82-93 (and an epic FA Cup Final defeat - Gazza injury etc)

Nevertheless it's a fantastic achievement but based on Clough's record without Taylor, I don't think Taylor gets enough recognition.

God imagine if it was us. I would be banging on about it the rest of my life.

He was invited to Amsterdam by Waddo when we played Ajax not long after Leeds sacked him and in a reciprocal gesture invited Waddo to sit on the bench at one of Forest's European Cup ties (it might even have been a final).
He clearly remembered that gesture and retained a measure of respect for Stoke, so much so that he got out of the dug out at the Victoria Ground during a 4-1 win and bollocked his own fans because they were taunting us during the 84/85 season!

They beat Ajax in the 1980 semi - won 2-0 at home but lost 1-0 away, remember the mental in the stands from program just thinking it looked ace in the terracing!
The other thing was the empty seats at the finals - tough tough times economically but not Uefa gravy train or TV overexposure back then

I remember when they played defending champions liverpoo in the European cup second round they won first leg 2 0 at home and on the bus on the way for the second leg Cloughie thought his players were very nervous so he ordered them all to have a couple of beers to calm them down, boring nil nil draw and the 2 times winners were out, imagine the headlines if a story got out like that nowadays.

I seem to remember Cloughie bollocking the Home support for having a go at Bill Asprey. Didn't a certain David Riley score in the same match? Later of Port Vale.

Now I'm going to sound like a twat here, what's new? But he did spend a lot of money, relatively, Fashnu, Francis are two I can remember. I loved Cloughie but let's not forget he didn't do it on a shoestring at Forest or Derby. But the OP is right it's unlikely a team coming up would win the league.

Clough was very open and joked a lot about how crap he was at buying strikers. Francis was probably his best striker purchase. Ian Wallace and Fashanu his worst. His view wasn't helped by Peter Taylor advising him a young striker at Chester was't worth pursuing. The Chester striker was...... Ian Rush!!!! Whatever became of him?

With Clough as England manager instead of Revie I think Hudson would have got a few more caps although Huddy wasn't the archetypal Clough player.

Forest won one league and 2 champions leagues !!!!!!! that statistic alone shows the measure of such an achievement. Juve had to win the Italian league for something like 700 times prior to winning their first ever champions league with a non-existent penalty in a final which should have never been played. cloughie is certainly one of teh all-time greats

The most frustrating thing is he went on too long. He did tarnish his legacy somewhat.

Could you imagine Aston Villa winning the league and then the European Cup nowadays? Even Liverpool is a pipe dream - the league is owned by Manchester both and Chelsea now. Arsenal bridesmaids too but always potential to win it Clubs like Spuds/Everton best they can hope for is Europe/FA Cup And this is exactly the reason why we should continue to field our strongest possible side in the League Cup,..... a genuine chance of some silverware for us this season.

Remember, Clough gets viewed as a national treasure these days for his ouspoken manner. He could be funny charming and often hit the nail on the head. BUT he could also be rude and obnoxious. There were times when he was embarrassingly bad.
