Pros: He's our best right back.
Cons: No opportunity for squad rotation.

I think he'll play if Geoff is still injured.

I think he'll play if Geoff is still injured. Geoff Cameron has just had a hernia operation, my guess is he will be out for weeks and weeks.

I thought it was common knowledge they wanted rid and the offer of a new contract was a smoke screen

Definitely need to start with Wilko tonight, he needs game time under his belt - in my opinion, still the best right back at the club. Cameron and Bardsley can't defend, even if their lives depended on it!

Whilst Wilko does need game time, I'd still be inclined to start with Phil Bardsley... Best player we've got in his respected position, against his old club, no great point to prove, given Gus' commendable comments but still, it's gotta be a no brainer. Let's face it, if it was an ex Stoke player coming back to the Britannia you'd bloody bet your house on him scoring, it's gotta happen for us at some point too

Are you off your rocker? haha Just think that the point of a defender is to defend first, not any of this 'wingback' rubbish, what is this NFL? Cameron is good going forward but leaves a hell of a lot to be desired defending-wise, Bardsley is too slow and turns his back on everything. People forget what we as a club have prided ourselves on doing and that's giving local youth a chance (Olly Shenton etc), which is why Wilko should play more - he loves Stoke City and Stoke City loves him - the only man to take on Robert Huth and win in fact, when he split his head open, the man who cut his head right opebn, blood everywhere and continued playing, headed a ball straight after. He's a PROPER defender, one of our own, and more to the point he tackles well, the ball, then the man. He should be 1st choice right back - sorry if I sound like Tony Pulis here but if there's one thing we hold on to it should be Andy Wilkinson.

We haven't prided ourselves on bringing local youth through at any point in the 30 odd years I've been regularly attending matches. Bardsley is 10x the defender that Wilko is.

I'm just saying, I'm 17 and have been going to Stoke since I was 4 (since 10 with a season ticket) and Wilko, Shotton, Shenton, these lads have come through the youth system... Denis Smith, Sir Stan? Always local heroes at our great club. Bardsely is slow, pussies out of most tackles, has a touch of a baby elephant and CANNOT defend whatsoever.

My point when starting this thread is "Is Bardsley under too much pressure for this match and should be rested to give Wilko a run out, or should MH pick his strongest team to target a Cup run and in view of 6 days before the Newcastle match?"
Bardsley and Cameron are Premiership class defenders. I'm disappointed at some people's poor opinion of either; Stoke will not be able to attract more talented RB's IMO. In them we have 2 players who have participated in teams that have beaten top class Prem. sides, played a Wembley Cup Final, and a World Cup for their country this year. How soon do some fans forget where the club was 10 years ago, when we were already knocked out of the League Cup by Oldham, and now pour scorn on some of our first class players.
I'm all for Stoke developing local talent, but that should not blinker our views on who the class players are.
(It looks like a wet match tonight.)
