Very pleased with that, having followed Howard Webb's most likely successor for years. It started almost twenty years ago, when I was driving into Euston, as I do, on most seasonal Saturdays mornings. With 25 miles to cover, I was always happy to listen to Cliff Morgan's Radio 4 sports programme, with its multitude of interesting interviews with participants of many sports, some popular and others I didn't even know existed! He was the perfect interviewer and not only because of his glorious Welsh lilt but because of his obvious enthusiasm and enjoyment of the job. One morning he interviewed a young primary school boy, who was utterly determined to be a referee and yes it was indeed the lad, Michael Oliver. Even then, there was no doubt that he would fulfil his dreams and I was riveted, making a mental note of following his career, if possible. Around eight yrs later, he appeared on the prog, once more, then in his mid teens and having already passed various refereeing exam's, participating in matches where he had to ref men, rather than boys! I was so delighted for him, but not in the least surprised. On cue, he became the youngest ref in the PL, a few yrs ago and will no doubt 'do a Webb', even though he is not, physically as imposing nor as amiable as Howard. Primarily, hoever, he is not one of your look-at-me referees, indeed the antithesis of the likes of Uriah Rennie and a few others I could mention, which further commends him, though he will doubtless now drop a clanger at the week-end, and even if he doesn't, will be insulted by the negative brigade on here.

The thing is with refs familiarity breeds contempt. Collina is widely reckoned to be one of the best ever by English fans(apart from Evertonians). But in Italy he's derided. If a ref officiates a team five times during one of those games a big decision will go against them..... and it's there forever. Like keepers, only mistakes are remembered.

I wouldn't bother starting with Crouch then. That Cardiff match last season, it looked like a Mackay game-plan for the Cardiff defence to tangle up with Crouch off the ball whenever a cross was about to come in and Oliver lapped it up hook, line, and sinker. Crouch was penalised for being wrestled to the ground pretty much every time Stoke built up a bit of momentum, it completely ruined our game. A pretty obvious tactic too, one player going for the ball and one player watching the man.
It reminded me of those games that Crouch used to be a part of in Europe, coming up against a 5ft 8 defender and looking like he was climbing on the bloke's shoulders to the ref because the defender couldn't get anywhere near it. Every attack broken down for a free-kick against him for being a gangly bastard.
To top it off, Oliver even booked Crouch for a supposed Adam foul on Fraizer Campbell. Don't know what he had against Crouch, but it isn't worth risking all of our attacks breaking down there again.

Anyone else ever noticed that local lad and premier league assistant ref also Stoke fan Simon Bennett seems to be placed at Anfield quite a lot (as he is this weekend) probably totally coincidental but I have noticed him being there quite a lot this is him for those who don't know

Sounds like a decent guy. Did he say why he had a burning ambition to be a referee, because that's something that's always mystified me about referees, especially the ones that aren't obviously control freaks/picked on at school/failed policemen.

onionman, it was apparently in the family, if my memory serves me correctly, but that doesn't make it any easier, unless it was his prime motive to overtake their successes. If not, then the opposite applies but he is a confident man and has so many more years left, being only 29 and ref's no longer having to retire in their late forties. It never ceases to surprise me how some on here remember every refereeing detail in any match they attend or view! I do wonder if some of you have a note book by your side, when watching.
