The memory of Whelan being penalised against Modric was in my mind, one of those Spanish (Iborian Coast) penalties. But Yaya's audition for the next series of Tumble was too theatric even for a premier league ref. Good job too!

Don't understand how ANY football fan can't see that both incidents weren't penalties.
Here's the rules:
kicks or attempts to kick an opponent trips or attempts to trip an opponent jumps at an opponent charges an opponent strikes or attempts to strike an opponent pushes an opponent tackles an opponent holds an opponent spits at an opponent handles the ball deliberately (except for the goalkeeper within his own penalty area)
Both incidents are the first two

It proves he missed the ball (by a mile) and impeded the player. Clear penalty, as was ours. How can you impede a player without touching them?

Or if you jump towards an opponent but don't touch him in any way shape or form the ref can blow for a penalty? I must admit I've never seen a penalty given for those offences

I don't understand how it's not a penalty? Pieters leg never made contact with Toure's leg? Pretty major part of a foul. Pieters pulls out of it just in time, there's no contact.

If not then I stand corrected.

He wasn't attempting to trip or kick him, he was attempting to win the ball! He failed on all accounts!

Toure dived and got exactly what he deserved, which was fuck all other than a yellow card.

Well if " charges an opponent " is an offence, Crouch should have got a penalty when Hart floored him. Or is it different for goalies?

How soft has our interpretation of the rules gotten? 10 or even 5 years ago (and definitely not in the leagues below) we'd have laughed at the suggestion that either was a penalty. Both claims (and Liverpool's today) were so so soft and only penalties by the very narrowest view of the rules.
