I get the impression that the main thing in our dealings is to get players on a free. In the sense that step one is to get the player on a free if he's a good player and makes sense, and then we see where to fit him in the team. I don't mean to criticize but having been given around 80million last season for our 9th position finish, surely there could have been some money to spend on players in the positions we needed. Tin hat on and all that and I'll accept all the criticism which will surely be coming my way but that's the impression I got

I think the decision to pursue free transfers this summer has allowed us to buy before selling.
It means we can get players off the wage bill with or without transfer fees...

If it was that easy to just sit back and wait for your targets contract to expire we'd all be managers. I was told several windows ago that this was "our way forward" by a close friend who has proven to 100% correct as of yet. My philosophy is nothings free in life.

Aren't the best things in life free? In 37 games time we will know the answer!

No such thing as a free lunch or a free transfer. Money changes hands in signing on fees etc. so we will have spent a lot more than it appears.

One marquee signing would have been a bonus. A striker, proven at this level would have been a must in my book! We did after all look toothless yesterday.

It's probably a knee jerk reaction but I found myself thinking after the game did he need to sign Bardsley and sidwell? The squad is evidently too big which could upset the balance. I didn't believe Bardsley was an improvement on Cameron when he signed, with yesterday doing nothing to convince me of that. Sidwell I can maybe see sense if he manages to offload palacios but have we really got room for two centre mids on the bench? At the end of last season I'd have been chuffed with a quality striker (hopefully diouf is that) and a winger, whether that was assaidi or whoever else. Then bojan would have been an added bonus.

We could've spent more on worse.
That's how I see it.

I agree previous poster.
Bardsley and Sidwell are scratch head signings for me.
Do not over a world of difference, or by any means a grade or two better than what we have.

Disagree, Bardsley is a natural right back and will be an improvement on Cameron who isn't. Sidwell will be an improvement on Whelan. Time will tell, it is too soon to make a judgement solely on one game when most of the team played poorly and Sidwell didn't even play.

We need to judge the new players after a few weeks rather than after one match. In Bardsley's case, we also need to judge him when he has a winger to play alongside, rather than being a one-man version of attack and defence.

Its a debate I suppose. I think Cameron has more about him than Bardsley. I think Muniesa deserves a place in the side. Ultimately someone has to evaluate why we were crap yesterday.

Stat on sky the other day had sidwell as third best in the premier league. Just caught the end. Tackling or passing, not sure.

It's not so black and white for me. On one hand it's great we are getting signings for bargain prices but on the other hand if you really want to push on it costs money. Put up or shut up. Bargain signings can only get you so far on their own. They need to be accompanied by real quality.
Overall i'm confused as to where we are going with it as it is now three transfer windows where we've spent the square root of FA. I can take one or two but when it pushes out to three and maybe four then it starts to naturally ask questions.
All it takes is one bad season and one or two questioning voices turn into 10 thousand or more questioning voices. As we know. It snowballs from there.

We got Ireland, Muniesa, arnie, pieters, odemwingie, sidwell, bardsley, teixeura, diouf, bojan for what ? 6 million ? That's what other teams our calibre pay for one player. Now I'm not advocating spending money stupidly - definitely not. But it would be a great sign that this club has some ambition to see us spend something like 5 million on a player we really need. I mean Sunderland spent 10 million in Rodwell. Qpr are signing Leroy fer. Why can't we ever spend some money on much needed players? Should I believe that pulis really broke the bank that we're still suffering the consequences ? I don't believe that alghougb it's true that a lot of players were bought who had no resale value

Sidwell is groomed for the Whelan role for me. And he will score goals Sidewell isn't a defensive midfielder though, and I'm sure Whelan would have more luck/chances in front of goal if he was playing higher up, I don't see how Sidwell would suddenly score more if he was in the same position playing just in front of the back four.

I agree with what the onlooker says on this one. We should have bought at least one marquee signing. Saying that I think it will all work out in the end, but we looked very lightweight on Saturday.
