Where to start...
Villa at home first match of the season should have been a formality but how wrong I was.
Hughes you've got to accountable for today, tactlilly inept against a side who boasted the likes of Sendoros and Hutton in their back four.
Shambolic and shameful against that shower of shit.

Should have been a formality? What a complete load of bollocks.
Football isn't played on paper and there's no such thing as formalities.

Easy with hindsight though isn't it? The team Hughes picked was the one most people would have gone with. The only criticism I've got is that he didn't change it sooner.

Sorry, but anybody who thinks a Premier League victory should be a formality really can't be taken seriously.
Some of us have turned into the very kind of fans we despised a decade ago.
A sad day in more ways than one.

Obviously still fuming mate but they set up with exactly what, that's right nothing up front that should remotely bother us. But we did what, that's right nothing. For large parts of the game we persisted in Diouff on the right and absolutely no one up front, ala his pre season set up. Total shit and really no excuse why Hughes even considered that set up.

We were poor today the main reason was nobody was pushing on and supporting Diouf, he was often the only man in the box.

Well you and van Gaal have learnt today that there is nothing formal about winning a Prem. match.

On paper we looked good, but positional play seemed to be so disjointed folk all over the shop. Hughsie is no mug and he'll know his selection errors and adjust. Keep the faith

Tactics were sound today, it was the execution that was off the mark, Diouf was isolated because the midfield failed us today, zonzi and whelan are key, they pick the ball up from defence and link up with the attacking four and they just didn't do that today, which is why we had so much backwards passing and passing sideways along the back four
You have to give villa credit though, they closed us down and played on the counter while completely crowding the midfield
If i was in charge, i'd play moses/wingie on the right and bojan behind diouf

Sounds like there are a few too many people who saw Villa as a pushover and they had more to prove today that we did cos they were crap last season and have been many pundits faves for a relegation place. Stoke players seemed to think that they just had to turn up to win. Thats poor considering. This may give everyone the kick up the zrse we need, a reality check, there are no easy games and we arent champions so heres to getting it right in the next few games. And lets not have those dickwads who still blame Pulis, this was Hughes team today.

No decent width today. Crying out for Oddie out wide to stretch them. Like watching Norwich nullify our possession last season!

We were poor today the main reason was nobody was pushing on and supporting Diouf, he was often the only man in the box. Exactly!!!!!!!! Unfortunately it was a simple as this. Shades of how it was with Crouch at the start of the season last year. TBH we did look like a 4-5-----------1 for the majority of th match.

I can only think of one or two games since we got promotion that i would have considered easy , you have to earn the right to win , today was awake up call , stuff that might have looked ok on the training ground and in friendlies is tested very differently in a competitive game in this league . Villa were well organised , worked harder and seemed physically stronger than many of our players today that for me is why they won the game . Also as tends to happen with us far too often we don't get enough players in the box when we are attacking to support the striker .
The gap between success and failure is pretty narrow , without the Odimwingie deal working so well for us we might have had a real struggle last season and we missed him terribly yesterday , our most effective forward by a long way

The tactics were worth a try, but they were wrong.
We were playing with this false number 9 Paul Spencer has been discussing for the past week or so and as he suggested it might, it just didn't work.
A reshuffle is needed next week.

Against a team like Villa , who packed the midfield and has a lot of pace, we should have played Crouch, when we went long bi-passing midfield, we looked much more effective. I think because he brought in all these ball players that he had to play them. Rather than pick the best team for the match. Made too many changes too quickly and didn't take into account the opposition.

Not put this on any other post up to now, but our midfield was very ineffective, to say the least. Must do better.

Villa are a poor outfit that you know will struggle again this season to stay up. The way that they rolled us over with ease is a big concern imo.
