OK, it's the first game. But the lack of movement up front really concerned me. Crouch re-dressed this a little, but Villa were opening us up at will. We needed Odemwhingie today and god forbid, Jon Walters would have at least added some vim.
But for me it was the lack of movement up front that ruined my day. However, the good news is that we can address this issue in training. A real nothing day. Arnie and Ireland were particularly piss poor.
Never heard the Boothen end so quiet. We can do far better than this.

Thought Diouf made some good runs in behind tbh, it's just that no fucker got their head up to see him doing it.

Diouf made more runs than anybody over the last 3 seasons shame the midfield didn't find him

The ball where Whelan actually did play him in actually encapsulated it all tbh. It was 5 seconds too late, Diouf went as soon as Glenn got it. Whelan took 3 touches then looked up, looked to the side, then played it. Just awful.

I didn't like Bojan and Ireland on the edge that was crying for PO and Arnie with either bojan or Ireland for me not both in a central cam role and a cm going wide or inside with his head up like an attacking Adam or Nzonzi/ Whelan coming up because it seemed congested and no off the ball movement.

Possibly, not convinced though, all's it needed was a half decent hoof most of the time.

I thought Villa were very clever.
They blocked the passes to N'zonzi and Ireland, let Whelan have it at will, then stuck 2, sometimes 3 on Arnie.
We had no idea what to do about it.
They also kicked us off the park and we had no-one who wanted to roll their sleeves up and give them some back.
Poor day all round best summed up as "typical Stoke".

Just back to the cbs. He needs to dribble it to a side and find players its a team problem like you pointed out.

We moved the ball too slow - we moved it side to side and not through the pitch with pace (not lumping it but passing forward and through the pitch with pace). We allowed Villa to maintain and recover their shape. This was similar to how we started last season but as the season progressed our passing was quicker and move progressive (through the pitch) meaning we were pulling teams out of position and shape.

Yes, credit to the Villa they had a match plan and stuck to it doggedly. They also carried far more purpose about their game than our lads. We were poor and for the first time in years we weren't dominating physically. But we are essentially a new team and i'm confident we will improve massively through the season, particularly when we can call on the skills Odi and Moses. I think Diouf will be superb once we sort the rest out - his class was apparent even though he was short on service (Bojan went close on link play). I'm still not part of this Arnie love-in that swept through the support last season, he still has to put a shift in. I feel much better about matters this morning to be fair, it was more of a disappointment and a reality check for everyone yesterday. However, it was still great to get to the game and we can only get better. We'll be fine.

I still think the formula for success is Adam at home and Ireland away. Either that or an upgrade on Whelan, as good a servant as he's been...

Agree with all this stuff. To add a little more criticism, I cannot recall when I last saw a Stoke side with so little fight. Last season we earned a bit of a name for coming back from defeat. This side seems unprepared. It looks several weeks short of a seasons start and lacking in motivation.
In defence of Arnie, during the first half he tracked back and did some good work in defence. In the second half he looked thoroughly fed up.
The team don't seem to know what to do with Diouf. He would be making runs and the ball would be going backwards, sideways and anywhere except up to Diouf. As soon as Crouch came on standing orders kicked in: knock it high for Pete and follow it up for the lay-off. It is not surprising that we looked better when he came on, the team knew how to incorporate him into the play.

Yes, a couple of times a counter-attack was on but we were half asleep. Your Right , we just didn't have the pace in the side to capitalise , a fundamental failing in our team until it was addressed last season ! Countless times last season we broke with quality and speed , the quality was there but not the pace , it needs addressing , I'm sure it will be !

That's a very harsh assessment of N'zonzi's performance yesterday. He wasn't great by any stretch but I thought that him, Arnie and Bardsley were the only ones who constantly tried to be involved in the game and to make something happen.

Spot on Dave a lot went missing those 3 didn't just nothing came off. I think we've almost got too many options and it's clouded what our best team is. 2 main things that need changing for me Moses or Odom in at wide right and Bojan inside for Ireland as Bojan can't play wide. Sidwell in for Whelan. Glen just isn't positive enough. He plays football like its rugby (everything sideways or backwards).

In fact I don't know why LMH just didn't start with the side that beat Fulham comfortably last game (without Assaidi granted). Bring the new boys in progressively off the bench if necessary later in the game. Way too much expectation and build up so a real leveller for us all I think.
