Hughes was effective last season at making changes where necessary and persevering where he thought it was needed. For that reason I'm not yet worried. It's also far to easy to forget after a poor performance that they do a lot of work in training towards how Hughes wants them to play in different situations. You learn much more from defeat than from an easy win so they should have plenty to work on in training. I also think it's clear from reading the comments on here and elsewhere (and I include myself given my initial frustrated reaction and calls for drastic changes) that few if any of us would be successful in football management.

All very true but the only problem is that the whole game scenario i.e Villa being well organised and enthusiastic and defending in numbers was so predictable we should have had something ready to deal with it. Picked the wrong team as far as Im concerned - should have stuck largely with the side that finished on a high last year.

We were defeated by our own hype.
You win football matches with desire, commitment, aggression and skill. We might have been superior to Villa on the skill count, but I feel they won the battle on the other 3 qualities. Did the players think they just had to turn up to win? I think many supporters thought that the case.

I think maybe it was an oversight to have had limited exposure to English football teams in the friendlies given a few new key players were not based here. I think we will see the best of them in due course.

I said before the game If we were playing villa mid November I wouldn't have been worried. Start of season always throws up stupid results and performances.
Probably find Burnley top in September then relegated.

Heavens knows I don't want a return to the pathetic final Pulis season of hit and (no)hope but the combination of Arnie, Bojan and Ireland is just too lightweight. Arnie needed a rocket up his arse today and Ireland is good off the ball but doesn't do a lot over the course of several games ON the ball.
How many times did I hear "Bojan isn't a winger he's a striker" today FFS! At his best (so far) at Barce he was part of a flexible front 3 that interchanged so yes he did find himself on the wing at times. For me Odemwingie and Adam instead of Ireland and Arnie could have made a difference today but overall there was a lack of application throughout the team - Ryan aside. "

We were shit! No fight and no fuckin clue. We looked better when Crouch came on. If we have given up our fight to be replaced by tippy tappy shit we are fucked. Hopefully the early kick in the arse will sort the fuckers out!

Wouldn't make a difference, he was the least of our problems, plus he isn't a DM.

If we go into the international break on 0 points probably dependent on next weeks result it will be a time for series reflection for the management team in terms of throwing the baby out with the bath water standing still says we need 4 points out of these three games let alone progress

I think many supporters thought that the case. Yes, the whole thing was strange. We are 1-0 down with 10 mins to go, but it appeared the vast majority in block 32 were more concerned with a quick exit from the car park than trying to be the 12th man, urging that goal from nowhere. FFS that depressed me.

I was disappointed that Hughes did not put subs on after about 55 mins. The formation clearly was not working. Arnie today was really poor today as he tried fancy things but kept giving the ball away for Villa to break. We need chickenwingie in the side asap, perhaps Moses as well, and we need that defensive steel that was clearly lacking today. Mark has Ireland as his favourite, but I don't think he's anywhere near the player a fit Adam is. Bojan btw was a bit unlucky today

We where poor but the wrist slashing going on, on here is something else. Bunch of new players in there first real game together and we lose 1-0.
Obviously we turned up expecting to walk over them and for that we sort of got what we deserved. Hughes will sort it out, just like he did last year and despite lacking in what matters.
It's done with, put it behind us and lets move on to Hull away... i still see us having a fantastic season with some fantastic new signings.
