Who gave away possession for their first chance? Was that Huth or Whelan? I think it was Huth but I can't be sure.

Didn't go nor listened to the game. Did our new signing Bojan play well?

Diouf did all the right things again today, got in the right positions, linked up well and worked his bollocks off, he just needs a goal and I almost get the impression he's trying too hard to find it at the moment. I really hope he can get off the mark for us in the Betis or Freiburg games, I think it'll settle him down nicely going into the Villa game.
Has anybody heard anything on Shawcross's possible injury? I noticed he went straight down the tunnel when he went off. He didn't have the best of games today and I think it was probably a lot down to the knock he was carrying.

I love Bojan. You can just see how much he is enjoying his football. Great eye for goal. Les should get a hefty bonus for that signing!

Enjoyable game but still no nearer deciding on our starting 11 against Villa. We never had this problem under TP.I would go for Bego, Bardsley, Huth,Shawcross,Pieters,Nzonzi,Whelan,.Bojan,Ireland,Arnie,Diouf.Bojan & Ireland look good together & I think LMH will have them playing together .We have so many options, I thought Walters played quite well today & I really like Muniesa & Nzonzi is a class act whether you like him or not.Odemwingie will be in line to play as well and LMH could drop Ireland back alongside Nzonzi & leave out Whelan.

Build a team around Bojan.
It's that simple.

Diouf and Bojan looked good today I thought.
Bojan can play any of the top 4 positions it would seem, but I would start Diouf centrally against Villa, with Bojan on the right.
Unfortunately that means dropping Wingie, but I think Diouf is worth his start.

Build a team around Bojan. It's that simple. I can certainly see why you would say that mate. I think I would rather he played in his best/favourite position rather than anywhere else but where does that then leave Diouf? I suppose if there's a chance that Bojan can realise the potential that he showed when he first broke through then that question might eventually become redundant. A very, very intriguing signing for sure.

A quick summary from watching today. The result might not be exciting but for a pre-season match we oozed class and were unrecognizable from our style of play form two years ago. The team is full of players comfortable on the ball, our only real issue was we at times were "doing an Arsenal" and trying to pass the ball into the net. Mark Hughes has got a real selection challenge but it strikes me he has built the team hew wants to play his way and the players fit so well in their positions. As for Bojan, I like many others can not actually believe a player of this potential and capability has signed for Stoke, if we can make him tick he could be our greatest ever transfer. It was noticeable he already appeared to be building a good partnership with Ireland, they often seemed to be very tuned in to each others play. The players: Bego - not a lot to do, commanded his box well and is clearly enjoying been more involved more with distribution. Bardsley - looked very solid, he is a proper right back, 1 or 2 decent crosses as well Huth - Solid if slightly lumbering return but that's no surprise, good to see the big man back Shawcross - A little switched off at times (esp for their goal) and his right wing gallop was a little comical but we know the Captain will be up to full speed in two weeks. Muniesa - Good game, beaten in the air a couple of times, but he worked really well with Arnie, its a much tighter call this season for the left back. Two really decent left backs in the club, what an original idea! Arnie - tuned in and out, but his touch and vision look as good as ever, he is a man who clearly needs a crowd to please Adam - huffed and puffed but constantly looked behind the pace and frustrated. At fault for the goal and looked fed up when taken off, Glenda did much better in his role, I think Charlie knows his days are numbered Nzonzi - He is going to be an absolutely key player for us this season, he makes us tick, moves into spaces and has such great control. Walters - Ran well, his touch and vision is just not at the level of his team mates anymore, thanks SJW but a sub at best this season Crouch - Finds the wide men well, hit the post in the 1st half with a good diving header, there is definitely still a role for Crouchie this season Diouf - Clearly happier in the main striker role, good pace touch and muscle, won balls he should not have won. A little frustrated in front of goal, but bags of promise here, great save from Robbo denying him a goal in the 2nd half Bojan - class, the real deal for the Barcelona 1st time touch and vision, good pace, could light up the premier league if we can build him up. My god he plays for Stoke! Pieters - More competition wont do any harm, looked sharp Ireland - The brains in the engine room, worked really well with Nzonzi and especially Bojan. Switched off a little which nearly cost us but esp at home will be a key player Whelan - doing all the things Adam should have been doing and doing it well. Wilson - looked good alongside Huth, I personally would keep him alongside Ryan to start Saw nothing today to change my mind this is the best squad we have had in the last forty years, exciting times to be a Stokie.

Cheers I think Bojan was designated to the right of the three but to be honest he spent the majority of the game drifting in and trying to open things up. Crouch led the line in the first half with Diouf in behind him and Walters and Arnie operating the flanks, in the second half it looked to me like Diouf was leading the line with Ireland in behind him and Bojan and Walters wide.

He likes to get central and first and foremost he considers himself to be a centre forward.

But you make the most of it when it falls into your lap. It'll be a big mistake if we don't get the best out of him. And that means building a team around him.

Yeah, I definitely think the ' number 10 ' role behind Diouf would be the best way to use him on the evidence of his performances so far. Until we do sign another winger though I expect he will remain wide with Ireland through the middle, hopefully we'll have somebody in before the Villa game. Ideally it'll be a left footed winger who can play on the right and cut in on his stronger foot in the same way we use Arnie on the left and allow him to cut in on his right foot. The only left footed winger we've been linked with recently though has been Yarmolenko and sadly I can't see us pulling that off, but it's a nice thought nonetheless!

Cheers for that. Only seen the goals. Where was Bojan playing? Out wide/ drifting in [/quote] Played on the right but came inside frequently. We lost a little getting down the wing that side and Bardsley will be kept busy, but the teasing sightings of his vision and skill are very exciting. It wont be a quick fit but I do think we have players who can get on the same wavelength as Bojan in Diouf, Nzonzi, Ireland and Arnie. We must be patient but if they can stay fit, boy we will give some teams a whipping this year.

Great report, bang on the money. I was impressed with Whelan, showed more energy than normal. Perhaps feeling the pressure of Sidwell coming into the squad. He just needs to make some more cutting passes forward for me and drive with the ball. Something Sidwell does well. Can see them two battling for a place this year

I properly cannot wait until the Villa game so I can see this side in action. The thought of watching Arnie in action again was good enough, but now...
