If we're talking about classic sounds then there's something about the fat Les Paul growl in conjunction with a decent wah-wah pedal that gets me nearly every time: Page's sound on 'No Quarter' and Slash's tone on 'Sweet Child of Mine' are superb.Not sure which make of amplification they used?
Hendrix is one of the greatest manipulators of sound in rock history.The extended intro to 'killing Floor' he sometimes performed absolutely slays me.

Angus Young probably has my favourite guitar sound. He plays an SG Standard, through the clean channel of a Marshall stack. No distortion, just the natural clipping characteristics of the amp at high volume - and it sounds utterly superb. I adore the sound of an SG, Gibson's best guitar in my book.
AC/DC wouldn't get that sound though if Malcolm Young didn't play one of the best examples of rhythm guitar ever though. He uses a Gretsch semi acoustic Jet Firebird (quick check on wikipedia) and is usually down in the mix, but he totally underpins the AC/DC sound.
On this tune you can hear the two brothers separately (Angus is first) and then how they sound when they come together. Angus also really controls his picking hand and the often controls his own volume by hitting the strings in a soft and controlled way - and then he lets it rip when he needs to. It's a really simple formula but it just works so well. For raw electric overdriven guitar sound AC/DC is the easy number 1. Still sends shivers down my spine.
And Sin City - another great example of that sound.
The totally raucous Let There Be Rock. Unbelievable energy, totally raw. You can't buy that sound.

Talking of controlled picking hands. Love the sound that John Fahey plucked from his guitar. {I was going to post this earlier, now there's more of a context.}

The Fender Stratocaster take 2. Great short clip on Dave Gilmour and the Floyd sound. After Neil Youngs "Old Black" Les Paul, Gilmour's "Black Strat" is perhaps the second most infamous electric guitar. He's still probably my favourite guitarist after all these years, just makes it look so darned easy too. Ridiculous really - that's the sign of a great.
There's an other worldly quality, particularly on Dark Side and Wish You Were Here. Genius. I'm pretty sure he was uses HIWATT amps and a Fender Twin Reverb for the classic Floyd albums.

Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead is another guitarist who plays like a demon. My mate Thom reckons this bloke is one of the greats.

About as close to fretwankery as I ever get. Not sure who, or what makes these here noises, but it is a great guitar sound. It'll do me.

I've got "Foxhole" on 12" red vinyl somewhere. Tome Verlaine used a Fender Jazzmaster for Marquee Moon, very clean and undistorted through a Vox or Fender twin by the sound of it.

Ry Cooder also has a unique style and instantly recognisable sound signature. Here with Bobby King and Terry Evans. Just superb.
