That guitar thread got me thinking. We all like music, right? But what are those classic sounds made up of? i.e what guitars do what?
One of my favourites is Lemmy.
What you have to notice on this is Lem's grin just after he EQ's his Marshall. That's his sound. Also the 2nd loudest band I ever heard live.
He's playing "Train kept a Rollin' (all Night Long)", from the first Motorhead album on Chiswick. I have it on white vinyl somewhere.

I like that. He's playing a bass like a guitar.

The sound Michael Schenker achieved by having his wah-wah pedal half-cocked is one of my favourite guitar tones.A sweet tone and a lyrical player.

Their best album in 30 years. "The World is Yours".
God bless you Lemmy. An inspiration to so many and a Stoke bloke.
We are Motorhead. The bollocks.

Slap bass is commendable and Mark King is gifted, but he sounds like he's having a poo when you compare him to Lemmy. Mark King is hardly appropriate when we are attempting to discuss the "instruments of the devil" MIAS. Next?

When The Devil needs a riff he calls Tony Iommi. When old Nick rises to claim what's his 'Sabbath Bloody Sabbath' will be his background music of choice.War Pigs,Paranoid,Children of The Grave,Black Sabbath etc....All seminal riffs alloyed with one of the most instantly recognizeable tones in rock.
A gibson SG?,drop-tuning and a fertile imagination transfigured rock music for good.

Tony Iommi could wring the neck out a guitar.

Still think Motorhead have the edge though.
Overkill.
You have to listen to this almighty tune right to the very end - it just keeps coming back at you. Massive tune.
It pisses me off no end that Glastonbury got a bunch of pussies (Metallica) to headline, when they could have had the real thing. Lemmy.

Whenever i think of Motorhead i can't help but think of my childhood and watching 'The Young Ones.'
I can't remember how the scene ran exactly, but i seem to recall Mike shouting "MUSIC" then enter Lemmy and Co. to administer a sonic punch to the stomach as they smash the fuck out of Ace of Spades in the front room.Televisual and musical perfection to a teenager.

Lovin philthy phil taylor in that cip as well. Learned to play the drums listening to him and Phil Rudd. Still havent mastered the double bass though - not for the want of trying though....still have a dabble from time to time and put on a bit of Metallica and listen to Lars Ulrich and see if I can crack it

Seeing as we're mostly on about Motorhead I've always liked this version of Ace Of Spades (Lemmy, Slash & Grohl!) If we're just on about bass players then this classic internet clip of some random busker is ace. Chuck in any instrument & you can't help but love this drummer.

Seen Motorhead many times (they are one the few bands that still do proper tours where you can get right in the action.
Think Lemmy is struggling a bit now judging by his Hyde Park performance.
Anyway here's Lemmy being Lemmy on one of my favourite getting ready to go out tunes....

Love Lemmy and Motorhead, nearly wore out the 'Golden Years' ep, nearly turned me to the fribside. Cycled to the top of Hamil {on a purple Chopper} to listen to the open air Motorhead gig at Vale Park {1978?}. We heard the sound check from Chatterley Whitfield sports fields. Red hot, loud as hell. Afterwards we flew down Hamil Road shouting abuse at the booze casualty Sweaties strewn all over the place. I don't think I've heard any Motorhead I didn't instantly like. 'Iron Horse' is a particular favourite.
But here's an axe folks... .. and a top bit of axe weiding, six strings is for beginners....

Is my memory playing tricks on me or did Ravi Shankar play a gig at the New Vic Theatre back in the late 80's early 90's?

Surprised that Jimi hasn't featured on this thread. I'm not in any way techy when it comes to music, so I have no idea what guitar he uses, just that he wears it upside down. I was going to post 'All Along the Watchtower' {apparently it features four different effects pedals}. But I prefer this....

I wasn't in S-o-T late 80's, early 90's so I can't confirm nor deny this. But I reckon you could well be right, my Dad reckons he saw him 'somewhere in Newcastle' during the mid 70's. So he has played here at least once.
I'm a fan of Ananda too {Ravi's nephew}.

Jimi was left handed and played quite a few different guitars but his classic sound comes from a right handed Fender Stratocaster played upside down and re-strung accordingly. He reckoned goofy Strats didn't sound as good.

Believe it or not, that tune was produced by the great John Paul Jones of Led Zep, no less.
