No competition for me. It's The Cramps every time. As proven here by Lux Interior singing "The Human Fly".

You can't tell me that Morrissey was better than this lot. No way.

Old Lux Interior had a touch of the Link Wrays about him. You literally couldn't dare take your eyes off him live, in case he did something really crazy. A phenomenal performer. The Cramps went straight for a certain type of sound and a certain type of attitude and never deviated. You'll certainly never see another post-punk band threaten or challenge their audience as they did, ever again.
Maybe The White Stripes came close, but I can figure those guys out. I've never been able to figure out The Cramps.

I've not heard any Cramps songs, but I prefer them to The Smiths.

This is like comparing Hudson to Greenhoff..Love them both No one could touch The Cramps live..They were absolutely fantastic..seen them 4 times..all in the 1980s when they were in their prime. My favourite Album of all time is 'A Date With Elvis'...psycho/rockabilly at its absolute finest..every track is brilliant..from Cornfed Dames to How Far Can Too Far Go. Lux Interior (The Most Exalted Potentate of Love) died a few years ago..but what a Legacy. Anyone who had the privilege to see The Cramps live knows what I mean... WELL EVERBODIES HEARD ABOUT THE BIRD........

It's not really a good comparison - two entirely different music genres. Like saying what do you prefer cottage pie or banoffee pie?
But psychobilly was right good stuff - and no thread on this subject is complete without these boys. This is one of my favourites...

No competition indeed. Skull rings, dark clothing and a black ceiling for you Clifford for such comparisons. I have to admit to not being a Cramps officianado; never seen them live, and have only heard their first eponymous album, 'Smell of Female', and that terrible 'Can your Pussy Do the Dog' nonsense. I did get mesmerised by the documentary/ live recording they did live in the Napa State Mental Asylum.
They strike me as a bit of a one-trick pony, which wouldn't always be a criticism, when the trick comes off {'Human Fly'} they're great. But a lot of the time the 'sawing the lady in half' isn't convincing. I'm afraid I get Cramped-out pretty quickly, I can only cope with them in doses of two or three songs. I'm not against them.
It's The Birthday Party for me if I need a fix of Horror Rock. or more recently, Old Time Relijun have been my choice. Grow yr sideburns, grease your hair into a big quiff and cut some shapes to this lunacy.
Aaaaaaaaaaarghhhh.

Another member of the 'bare chested men brigade', Iggy has a lot to answer for. The aforementioned The Birthday Party.
