I do hope that the BBC decide to repeat this wonderful story on BBC One. If they had ever wanted a script about 'goodwill to all men' then they have truly found their target. Xmas viewing I truly hope.

Thanks Malcolm, great bit of viewing to add to the film. If only we were all as uncomplicated as nello, the world would be a better place that's for sure. He epitomises everything about the people of stoke and their friendliness, and in the many years that I have been to stoke either visiting relatives or going to the footy, I have been so lucky to make so many good friends. You must be so proud of your friendship with nello, as I am sure he is.

Does Toby Jones have a more pronounced Potteries accent than Nello?

Does Toby Jones have a more pronounced Potteries accent than Nello? Not surprising really as he was brought up in Dresden. He was born in Hammersmith - did the family move back to Stoke or did he spend a lot of time up there with relatives? He doesn't normally have a Stoke accent in real life but, with his dad being a Stokie, you'd expect him to be able to do a good one.

Watched it twice now on the I Player but it falls off it on Thurs. Where can I get a copy of it to watch again?. I just love it, it will become a classic no doubt.

Freddie Jones (Toby's dad) parents lived in Dresden his mother played the piano in what was then my local the Park Inn Freddie often visited his parents and I saw him many times at said hostelry I presume Toby accompanied him on his visits so spent a lot of time in the Potteries although I never met him.

Finally got round to watching it last night and thought it was a great film. As people have said anybody slagging it off saying it's a Stoke city film is missing the point, the film is about an individuals life and just happens to be set with Stoke city as a back drop. makes a change to see a film set around football that isn't glorifying football violence. The film transcend Stoke city as a football club and is more a film about the human condition, if people slagging off this film can't relate to the issues trials and tribulations surrounding this film they are very emotionally detatched. Funny deeply upsetting at times but ultimately a feel good film that says to us yes some parts of life are shit but we always have our football, mates, church or whatever helps us cope in very dark times. Looks set to be a cult classic along the lines of withnail and I.

Wonder which 'player' called him a m-ng, whoever it was should have been sacked.Bloody cretin. Apparently the BBC deliberately did not identify any of the playing staff in the film to avoid any legal problems. I'm sure the Oatcake Admin would hope, for the same reason, that no player is identified on here as the one who (allegedly) used the m* word - so best not to speculate in print.

Just a thought, and it's probably not practicable, but could past wrongs be put right? What I'm thinking is that NB didn't score in the villa testimonial - could something be set up for the future where he came on again and this time scored? Against the vale would be ideal, but that maybe might not happen, but maybe a preseason friendly or summat?

I don't remember this testimonial game against Villa.Who's testimonial was it & had Macari already left us for Celtic ? I don't think Nello is as quick now as he used to be!!

It has certainly been mentioned whilst the film was in production - and I think a lot of people knew it anyway. Not sure if it has been mentioned on this thread though.

It was Gordon Cowans' testimonial in May 1993, just after we had won Division Two. Lou didn't leave until October of that year, so the films timeline differs slightly.
