Patrick Roberts Remember the name He does look exciting. But he's a fast, dribbling winger-type, isn't he? We've always seemed to produce them by the dozen - although he looks eye-catchingly promising on youtube. What we really seem to lack is proper, rounded central midfielders - and even more particularly, holding midfield-types. Even Barkley seems more of a No.10, rather than someone who could comfortably slot into midfield.

Roberts looks like an early Jack Wilshire at the moment. Time will tell with him I suppose.....

He should play regularly in the Championship for Fulham. And about time Chelsea produced a player! Just having a quick google, the most-hyped central midfielder in the England age groups seems to be someone called Dan Crowley at Arsenal. You never know how they'll grow when they start playing proper football but he does seem to attract some massive hype - even he seems to be a floaty, No.10 type.

This is the worrying thing about gerrards retirement. All those on the other thread saying good riddance need to think bout who they think is a genuine long term replacement... dont get me wrong, I think his time is up as well but theres nowt to definitely replace him with.
I cant remember a scarcity of midfield talent like this. The names mentioned are all ones that people hope/think may turn out to be top class but none have actually shown it yet...
We could be heading for more non-qualifications the next few years.

Crowley looks quality, definitely a out and out CM / No.10 which is good, there's a lot of fast tricky young wingers out there, not so many cultured players, which Crowley seems to be. I like James Ward Prowse, think he's quality.

Lewis Baker is a bit better than Loftus-Cheek as things stand in the Chelsea ranks but he's more of an attacking midfielder. Phil Jones and Jack Rodwell are the two obvious candidates for DM. An outside shout for the late Jack Cork? I really like him in there anyway.

Crowley is a new name on me FM, I'll follow his progress if he breaks through this year.

Do you really need to ask the question Grapey? Ha. Just thinking back to Gazza, Ince, Scholes, the rampaging Gerrard of a decade ago, Lampard. We've even got a shortage of serviceable Batty or Butt-types. We'd kill for a young Owen Hargreaves right about now! You can take it a step further than that. A generation ago, we had players like Tim Sherwood or Kevin Richardson who spent their careers mainly at top clubs, playing a key role in winning league titles, but were still so far down the England pecking order they could only ever win a cap or two each. A young player as good as that pair would probably be looking at 75 caps in the current set-up. The same could be said for virtually every position. Perennially overlooked defenders like Steve Bould and Steve Bruce would be a massive step up from today's automatic selections. Yesteryear's back-up strikers like David Hirst, Andy Cole, Robbie Fowler or Les Ferdinand would have the team built around them. Tim Flowers, Nigel Martyn, David Seaman and Chris Woods were all vying for one spot, while someone like Steve Ogrizovic, probably about 10th choice at the time, would have been on the plane to Brazil as Joe Hart's understudy. The only thing we have now, that we didn't have back then, is an abundance of fast wingers. Don't know what that tells us. Something about poor coaching at a young age probably.
