Following Spains performances withe the 'false number 9' I think Germany are looking to play the same way. I say this as they have picked just 1 out & out striker (Klose who is 35) with Podolski who can play centraly. To me if you intend to play with 1 upfront then you would pick 3 out & out strikers in the squad. Germany having picked 1 suggests 460 formation.
Personally I don't like the system & I hope it doesn't catch on.

A recurring point of discussion throughout Euro 2012was Vincente del Bosque’s decision to pick his team without a recognised forward. Surprising though it was, it hardy merited the incredulous responses it generated. Several years ago Carlos Alberto Parreira predicted that in the future football teams would be deployed without strikers. His words resulted in raised eyebrows. It suggested a dull defensive future where rigid shape would exceed invention. In reality, if Spain’s dazzling display of kaleidoscopic movement is a template, we may have a lot to look forward to. And Parreira’s words will be proved to be prophetic.

That's nothing, back in the 90s Brian Little picked Stoke teams without any recognisable players in any position. Ahead of his time, was our Brian.

They've taken Kevin Volland as well who can play up front

Podolski and Muller are more than capable of playing as a striker, they didn't really have many options with Gomez missing most of the season.

Actually I seem to remember a night match against Fulham when Lightbourne, Thorne and Crowe were all unavailable, so Little had no option other than to play with no strikers. Kavanagh and Oldfield took it in turns to be the furthest forward of the six-man midfield. Guess what ... the plan didn't work.

That's an excellent piece Joe. However, my favourite bit was this: 'The signing of Michael Kightly has livened things up slightly'

Terribly tedious for me, I find it mental how much some people love to watch it, the beauty of football I suppose!

I can hardly wait.
