my punt £10 on the nose Suarez or not
probably get better than 28's now too
my thinking
1) No European country has won a major Football competition in Latin America
2) Cant stand Argentina or Brazil (absolutely)
3) Suarez will make the later stages in spite of his op
4) The other striker is quite tasty as well
5) the competition will not be about defending - it will be about attacking
6) Why not Uruguay

Chile are the better outsiders in my opinion. (Although I think the Argies will do it)

You've wasted a tenner. The winners will come from Brazil, Argentina or Spain. Maybe Germany or Italy.
They have the best players and coaches.

Uruguay will struggle to make it out of the group. I fancy the Italians and us.

I don't think Uruguay will get out of the group, to be honest.
A half-fit Suarez and Cavani outside, don't they they look pretty ordinary?

Brazil will win for me. I'd be very surprised if they don't. Who will beat them in the latter stages in front of such a powerful, hostile atmosphere? Would be extremely difficult.

Climate suits them and they have a more favourable schedule with Costa Rica first game. They are the best side in the group.

Godin has looked anything but in his last two outings, but yes they aren't exactly stellar from 1-11. Then again we've got Glen Johnson and no proper defensive midfielder. I doubt I'll back it but 28/1 is worth an each way shout with Coral who will refund the bet if Brasil or Argentina win.

Uruguay have three excellent players in Suarez, Cavani and Godin but they don't particularly strike the fear of God into me. Not with Diego Lugano and Caceres likely to be arseing around at the back.

Take the above point about the climate, although England play the potentially decisive match against them in Sao Paulo, which shouldn't be too hot. On paper, I'd give England the edge especially if Suarez is undercooked - but it so often looks different on grass!

Listening to the South American sports journo Tim Vickery a few weeks ago and he seems to suggest Brazil would much rather player Spain and Holland over Chile. Btw, Holland's squad looks very average (on paper)

Outright win bets only.

Out of the South American teams, Uruguay and Argentina would be my favourites.
I can't see Brazil coping with the pressure. They will make the latter stages but talk of them winning it will be wide of the mark, even as host nation. If there's one nation in the world that puts enormous pressure on their national football team, just like England, it's Brazil and their current lads wont have what it takes to step up IMO.
Argentina would be my favourites to win the whole thing but Uruguay could cause some upsets and in the context of this thread, represent immense value for money at 28/1. After all, Uruguay made the semi-final of the last World Cup, they are the current Copa America champions and also have 2 World Cup trophies to their name.

Yep, similar to 82 when Brazil went out to Italy early in the knockout stages. Brazil had a fantastic team, Socrates, Falcao, Zico etc, but defensive lapses and a Paulo Rossi hat trick sent them out. As well as 3 goals, Rossi missed an absolute sitter too.
Spain look to have the most complete team, especially if they get Costa fit and firing. But if Argentina's attacking players click there could be fireworks.

Thank you. If they get Falcao fit they might be dark horses. And we could well meet them in the 2nd round...

Columbia qualified strongly and should get out of their group along with Ivory Coast. They'll progress.

I quite fancy the Japs to qualify, and they would really give us a game. I think we could take the Ivory Coast - but Colombia would be really tough.
