Athletico Madrid winning the league.
Very noble considering they just lost the league title.
Any ideas why guys and gals?

I reckon they were applauding their own players.

Shame the club are so scummy. 100,000 seats and they give 400 odd to the Athletico fans.

Been a barcelona match once years ago, don't think they are. "scummy fans". Seemed same as any other foreign supporters. English fan mentality different and better than those on the continent to me.

Is it a stretch to suggest it was just a show of class from the home support for recognising the best team won the league?
I know it's not fashionable, but sportsmanship has its place in football.

Sportingly applauding the champions results in confusion! Like here. Brisbane won the A-League a few weeks ago and when West Sydnety stepped up to the podium to get their runners up medals I politely applauded and some people looked at me as if I had nine arms.

Away support isn't really part of Spanish football culture. Why is that?? I always presumed it was down to the distances travelled. Madrid to Barcelona for example is about 380 miles.

Distance may play a part but as someone said above even in the derbies away teams are very poorly represented. There's just not much of a culture of it full stop. Spain used to be very poor for a European country, I doubt people had much expendable cash in the 78s and 80s to go following football teams round so I guess the away fan culture never took root. Also it's a lot more common for away fans to just buy tickets in other areas of the ground in with the home fans - you always see shirts of both teams in all areas of the ground in La Liga games. Btw, on the issue of sportsmanship, who gave Man City a clap when they lifted the trophy?

I was in barca over the weekend a works sales conference and managed to get a ticket. It was right next to the 400 athletics fans. Previous posters are right - they don't travel in Spain to watch games although they have sold out their final allocation fir the Champions league. Barca fans applauded their opponents and then booed off their own team.

You can count on the fingers of one hand the Spanish clubs which take half decent away followings anywhere. Atleti, Bilbao, Sevilla/Betis occasionally, thats about it.
Not just distance but infrastructure as well, unless you catch the brand spanking new express it's a monster trek from Madrid to Barca on train.

Sportsmanship, or just filling a huge chunk of the ground with dispassionate neutrals? Your attitude to overseas football makes me sad. Not overseas football, just Barcelona and to a much lesser extent, Real Madrid. I cannot stand them for the following reasons: 1) A lot of people appear to have bought into the Barcelona brand, with this myth of the club being something worthy of special attention, a bit like 12th Century Welshmen claiming that the country was founded by Joseph of Aramithea when he got a bit lost sailing to Crete. There's the romantic image of Barcelona as the second army of the Catalan freedom fighters persecuted by Franco, but the reality is that they are now every bit as much of a plastic corporate sell out as Man Utd or Chelsea, if not worse, content to fill half of the ground with tourists every week and pimp themselves out abroad. The end result is that the not stop Barcamania in this country is more than a little tiresome. 2) The La Liga TV deal is dangerous. If Spanish clubs continue to do better than English clubs in Europe then how long will it take for one of our 'elite' to make a serious push for a similar deal so that they can be competitive, especially in light of FFP? My money would be on Chelsea being the instigator. 3) Referees in European competition. This has just become a bad joke now. Are they scared of them or something else? 4) Their youth policy of hoovering up the best talent from around the globe seems a little sketchy to me. Again, it's no different to Man Utd sucking up all the best talent from across the country, but is endlessly lauded. 5) It is absolutely no exaggeration to describe their team as the biggest cheats in football. I don't actually mind Athletico Madrid and hope that it opens the Spanish league up a bit. History says that it won't, though. I quite like Bilbao, whose ethos as a club is both admirable and, unlike Barcelona, wholly genuine. I'm very fond of the German way of doing...well, pretty much everything. They seem to have struck the balance right while still producing teams that are competitive in European competition and a phenomenal national team.

Really noble of them.
They just saw the 'other' Madrid win the title over their arch rivals at Real. Basically the same as every other club in England cheering anyone but Manchester United all these years.
There is absolutely nothing 'noble' about anything to do with Barcelona.
