Without a shadow of a doubt my only dissapointment this season has been our lack of goals from set pieces particularly corners.
Huth and Shawcross used to bury 10-15 goals a season between them.We seem to have got progressively worse each season.
This year probably less than 4 goals from the whole side from corners,i cant fathom why whether its the delivery or the movement.
Whatever with the height in the side we have its poor.

We haven't looked remotely like scoring from them. The strange thing is the team that is supposed to be the antithesis of that type of football, Liverpool seem to have scored loads from set pieces.

My only disappointment was not buying a bony type striker.
Top 10 would have been secured weeks ago

I think we concentrated on the things we needed to change. I reckon we will be a more balanced team next season with the capacity to score from open play and set pieces. For such a big side we are very light on headed goals in particular. Hopefully our strike force will be addressed during the transfer window.

Have shawcross and huth ever got 15 goals between them? Huth got 9 couple of seasons ago. I think delivery has waned. No Etherington, No Pennant. Arnie's is getting better and Ireland/Adam (Jobshare) are improving, but not as good.

Mine is that despite performances generally being better our away results are just as poor as previous seasons. Apart from that all good and I'm expecting an improvement next year.

This year probably less than 4 goals from the whole side from corners,i cant fathom why whether its the delivery or the movement. Whatever with the height in the side we have its poor. It's a fair point and for me the answer lies in the delivery. For the most part, the delivery of deadballs, both free kicks and corners, has been abysmal. We have had the odd chance emerging from them but I can barely recall us winning the first header and having a genuine opportunity to score from a corner. It is a real positive though that we have had a what feels like a really good season (or at least it will be if we can finish off with 4 points from the last 2 games) whilst being in real transition for the first half of it, having struggled for goals from set pieces, having been without two key players (Huth and Begovic) for significant spells and on the back of a pretty appalling away record that hasn't brought us anywhere near enough points from what I believe have been some very good performances.

Our delivery from set plays has been particularly shit this season to be fair.

We were 'found out' a couple of seasons ago and any defender worth their salt knows how to defend against us, Crouch hasn't been on the end of many crosses this season - perhaps its time to change our style.

This and last season we've been shit from them. Last season I thought it was the delivery and I do this season.
Shawcross league goals in last 4 seasons-
1 2 1 1
Huth in last 4-
6 3 1 0

My biggest disappointment is the amount of really shit goals we've given away.
If anyone could find out, I'd like to see how many we've conceded between 35-45 minutes?

I'd like to see the stats of other teams in the league as well. Not many teams score regularly from corners.

No Huth, Shawcross has messed up a few chances, nobody in the league could better Pennant and Matty's deliveries back in the day, that style has been 'worked out' more, we no longer play for set pieces, the new regime probably spends more training time on other areas of the game.

Set pieces used to be a major threat when we had Shawcross, Abdy, Fuller and Mama (yes Mama ) in the area to connect. Latterly we have had Huth who has been the most dangerous. I agree this season we haven't had the return from set pieces from headers but - I may be wrong - I think up til Christmas we had chances but they simply weren't put away - just over the bar or wide and many of those fell to Huth. I actually think we would have gotten a few more points earlier in the season if we had taken those chance. Since Huths absence I havn't noticed so may chances missed from headers but Ryan has had more than his fair share with his feet. Just one of those things.

Combination of poorer delivery, lack of movement in the box, and better defending.
Only Rob Huth really attacks the ball from a set piece. Ryan is OK, but for their size, Crouchie and Fonzie are a bit timid.

This is a part of the game where we certainly need to improve next season! We are bottom of the league when it comes to corner kicks now!

Under Pulis we spent a lot of time on the training pitch practising set pieces, etc. Under Hughes we don't and that's why we don't look as dangerous from them. Simple.

I am surprised not to see JoeinOz on this thread, as our woeful set piece scoring record was one of his hobby horses (alongside his role as the grim reaper) in the pre-Pulis days.
90% of the problem is the very poor delivery.
Whelan & Ireland just float the ball up and Arnie & Charlie are as likely to put the ball straight in to touch as into an area of danger.
Most teams now have someone who can whip the ball in to dangerous areas where a touch is all that is required, we don't.
