Anyone got newts in an ordinary garden wildlife pond? If so how did you get them and do they look after themselves ok? We're got frogs and at least one toad happily using our pond but I've never seen a newt in the garden.

I've had common / smooth newts in the garden and pond area. I have discovered more out of the pond resting under rocks where they like the dark damp conditions to rest during the day. They become active at night to look for food.

I've been asking about getting newts for my pond. All UK species and habitats are protected bar the palmate newt but there are trade restrictions.
If you have any success Sal, then share the knowledge.

I found them when clearing up an old rockery area during the daytime - the neighbours have them as well and he doesn't have a pond. I tend to keep an area of garden unkept and let it overgrow to keep the wildlife happy. It's amusing when you find one because they are totally docile and don't move until they warm up a little from your hand.

We've got them, we built the new pond and they appeared the next springtime. They only use the ponds for their eggs, then go back into damp fields and areas.

If you get one that's about 8'0" long dunna go anywhere near it. Chances are it's not a Newt but a Crocodile. That's the only advice I have.

When I were a lad we used to get loads of them from the sand quarries owned by Shentons but we called them Newts and Askers don't know why or if there is a difference but they lived in a pool surrounded by sand.
Them were the days =)

I've got a little pond at the back which used to have an industrial size filter & fountain but it's got a bit out of hand and wild & overgrown. I had a go at cleaning it up a bit last week and to my amazement saw about a dozen little baby goldfish hiding in the algae..about 15 millimetres long....amazing
And upon closer inspection found about 8 or 9 more..the same size but black.
I don't know how old they are but there's only 3 adult goldfish in the pond and I've never noticed baby fish before.

Attachment DeletedImagine my surprise... First Bardsley, then Sidwell, Teixeira, Diouf, now Mrs Newt. Yes, the latest arrival was spotted just now after years of fruitless searching. Anyone know if it's palmate or smooth?

We've had frogs for a good few years now but this year we came across a breeding pair of newts for the first time.. We didn't introduce them - must have found their own way to the pond. We've also found a great diving beetle larva in there - apparently they are vicious little buggers when they hatch. Dunno how that got into the pond either!
