I like Milner as a CM a lot, I think he's suffered from not getting a regular game in that position and people (such as Woy) thinking he's a winger. Useful squad player as well as he can cover a few positions (handy if we're going light on defenders as I think we should).
Henderson gets into my side ahead of him primarily as he's used to playing that role week in week out with Gerrard (and linking with Sterling and Sturridge).

He isn't. In central midfield he's actually a decent player imo, he's a good all round box to boxer who's got a goal in him. On the wing he is but then he isn't a winger. Well he is. A journeyman plodder who will offer nothing other than defensive cover. For once the squad has some skilful footballers to consider yet people are still harping on about runners. You need a mix, with Gerrard being the furthest back You need either a Henderson or Milner type in there too against the better side. If we had a better defensive midfielder then I'd go with Barkley and Lallana but I think that'd be pretty suicidal against Italy.

We'll never have a better chance of beating the Italians - they are notoriously slow starters. We need to be working out how we will beat them, rather than putting a team out for a draw and end up losing after the inevitable defensive error.

Another question.. Can you see Hodgson having the balls to leave Lampard at home?

Putting a team out with Lallana, Chamberlain/Rooney, Sturridge and Sterling is putting a team out for the win. You need the balance against what will be a strong Italian outfit who will be tactically astute.

Hart Johnson Shawcross Cahill Baines Henderson Gerrard Lallana Stirling Rooney SturridgeThat would be my choice, but sadly Shawcross will stay at home, Henderson wont start and i cant see him going with four natural attacking players.

Milner gets unfair criticism IMHO. He isn't the most flashy of players but he is a rock solid trustworthy pro. Also, if players are picked on their England form Milner certainly merits a place in the squad. He's been one of the most consistent players during the Roy era so far.

That's exactly the team I was going to post, the only decision for me would be whether to go with Lallana or Barkley?
Id go with this team too. I think it would be a great idea to start Henderson alongside Gerrard due to their club form together. With regards to Barkley, I think he is a cracking young player but Lallana has been in a different class this season for Saints and for me, has to start.

Yeah Henderson and Gerrard are in terrific form together and if Liverpool win the title and Everton manage to grab 4th spot, then there would be some real individual momentum there, from potentially seven (eight if you go with Barkley) outfield players who could/should be in the first eleven.

Criminally .....Wilshire will be his 1st name on the team sheet If he'd gone overseas two years ago he'd be 70% better player now. But he stayed and got stale. He's still a very talented young player but he won't grow and fulfill his potential while stays in the Premier League.

Given possesion is going to be even more important in Manaus than it is anyway at international level I wouldn't take Henderson in the squad at all.
Italy have already gone public on how they are worried by Englands pace, given that & given our defence (left backs aside) is not good enough I thing we should go for an attacking line up v Italy.
Hart it will be 4 accross at the back left back any of Baines,Cole or Shaw - Baines for me RB: dreadful options - Johnson but only because he is playing in a wining side & his possesion is better than Walkers - neither of them can defend. CB: It will be Cahill (who can pass to be fair to him, although he is slow & makes elementary rrors on a frequent basis)& Jageilka - Ryan v Balotelli would be easy for Ryan but we all know he isnt going to Brazil.
Gerrard to sit deep as he is doing for Liverpool
Chambo,Lallana,Barkely,Rooney & Sturridge for me however if Milner plays I won't ne upset as he has had an excellent season (in Europe too)
Welbeck & Sterling would scare the Italians
Italy are not that good & have to play ALL their games in the sweltering north England should be finsihing 2nd in this group (assuming Costa Rica are not great) behind Uruguay
our defence though....

This summer is too early for him probably - but how good did Stones look for Everton yesterday? Looks a proper talent
Getting rave reviews from the Everton fans - and Martinez has said he expects him to become the best centre-half in the country.
Wouldn't be surprised if he was a fixture in the XI by the next Euros.
Not bad for a bloke I thought was an attacking full-back!

I'm another one who would start Milner for Henderson against Italy, and tell him just to get close to Pirlo and stop him passing and dictating the play.Pirlo sat deep in their midfield in the Euros, away from our centre mid 2 and killed us.

He looks very composed and comfortable with the ball at his feet Grapey, just what we need as Jagielka isn't getting any younger and Jones doesn't seem to have fulfilled his promise (I had great hopes for him).

Looking at these XIs we've got here it seems to me that we have some pretty exciting forward options but for me we're crying out for a genuine defensive midfielder that would allow the forwards to go and express themselves. Not convinced Gerrard is the man for the job, he naturally wants to be further forward and I can see good sides countering us with him there, same with Henderson. I guess Barry and Carrick are the other experienced options. Meh.

Hodgson might as well go for it because I'm not sure Johnson/Walker, Jag,Cahill or any of the defensive midfielders are up to the job at this level. I'm even waiting for Hart's next rickett when I watch England.

There's a lot of sense in pairing Henderson and Gerrard given their partnership and familiarity. I'd play Lallana too and look at the Ox and Sterling as the right-sided attacker, mixing the two as and when.

Yeah I know, Paul, and they are probably the best option, I'm just not that confident in them as Gerrard is generally the deeper of the two if I am correct. Liverpool don't exactly have the best defensive record either and I frequently hear people talking about how exposed the centre backs are. To be fair I've not watched a lot of football beyond Stoke and MOTD this season so I'm not the most qualified to comment.

Henderson isn't shit he's a great functional player who is very technically competent and now has added tactical awareness, intelligence, and confidence to his game under Rodgers. Provides tremendous balance as he can attack and defend in a disciplined way which is important at the highest level.
