When you look at the money that Redknapp made on his signings, it really is baffling as to where the money went.
55M spare is a lot of money, even allowing for a larger than average wage bill. TV money was still large back then.
They were running at a high percentage of income to outgoing at one point, which I find strange as they are a similar sized club to us with similar fanbase but a much lower net spend.
Odd in the extreme.

Elystoke sums the "great" pompey fans nicely, my last encounter with them was last year taking my 7 year old godson and his friend to watch their team Bournemouth play the mighty Pompey in Div 1 after bournemouth out played them easily we were leaving the ground, as 7 years do they shouted out Bournemouth, as three pompey fans walked past, "shut up you f*****g c***ts these wonderful and loyal fans sneered at these two kids, that is why I hope they disappear into the conference, taking with them the plans for the ground in the middle of the harbour, the other 3 grounds they have launched in the Evening News, and the service of thanksgiving to St Harry who had p*****d off!! Rant over!!

Rant over!! thats not nice re your godson etc, but 3 ignorant fans dont make the rest bad !! we have them at Stoke, all teams have a band of pricks, thats the way it is im afraid Would rather have Bournemouth & Pompey fans than " the other team " that lies in between the 2 !! My mate is a season tkt holder @ Fratton, and he said over 800 went to Rochdale last night !! to me, thats impressive

I don't like the Fairies from St marys much either!! I think when you are exiled from your home town team the local ones around you become the rivals that's been the same for me, Brighton Bournemouth when we were struggling Skates and Scummers now we reached the heights, as for comments to my godson in fairness I called him the same when he asked me for a chelsea kit!!

Portsmouth's problems weren't because of transfer fees, it was the wage bill. Their wage bill peaked at 52m during a time when clubs were receiving substantially less from TV rights than they are now. When you consider that our wage bill isn't much higher than that now but the 2007 rights were sold for 1.7b and they sold for double that recently and we're struggling to break even, they were inevitably doomed. Couple that with a lot of these high earners being bang average on long contracts and that's where their problems came from. Mismanaged from every level. The chairman signed off stupid deals, they were negotiated by an imbecile and targeted by Redknapp. They should all hang their heads in shame.

Loving it, may they slide into the conference and play Aldershot next season in the big Hampshire derby if Aldershot stay up that is.

If they can keep their ground as full as it appears to have been so far this season, then a season or two in the Conference might do them some good. Will allow them to stablise, get the business side sorted and come back stronger. Other than the retard with the bell, I never had a problem with them. Loud, passionate fans who didn't deserve to be so badly let down by a succession of fkwits who couldn't sort out the money side. Makes you thankful for Tony Scholes, doesn't it*? *

And today they've sacked their Manager - that is either balls-of-steel brave with a handful of games left, or incredibly stupid

(I think 82!?) ... and he'd be what, mid forties then? Then he would be in his mid to late seventies now? (someone please tell me I have that wrong - that must mean I'm at least .... )

ely (robbie) yes who could forget reading great company ,great game shed loads of beer and 3 stoke fans and 1 pompey fans getting a round of applause from a train full of reading fans happy days Was a cracking night, then a strange morning as one of the Stoke fans girlfriend (that I'd never seen before!) arrived at my house very early o'clock having driven overnight from Stoke and blown her engine up en route! Hope you're well mate.

I've been to Portsmouth on several occasions and found the place and fans most accommodating, plenty of really good boozers.
Crying shame for the fans and just goes to show what idiotic owners can bring upon the ordinary fan. The FA must be partially responsible surely?

quite sad really, from playing AC Milan in europe and winning the FA Cup to potential trips to Wrexham and Woking next season, can't imagine how their fans must find that

I live on the Isle of wight, so Portsmouth are the nearest big team. They have a big following. The club has been wrecked by dodgy owners and a very dodgy manager. I know people who have and do work for the club. Arry got them up to the premiership and did well the first time he was in charge. I think the Damage was done on his second time at the helm. The contracts given out to some of the players were unbelievable. I am pretty sure they were still paying some of them up until recently..... Arry so pleased he never got the England Job..
