I have it on good authority that the naming rights for the Brit are up for grabs.. Fancy the stadium named after you? stump up a cool 1.25M per season and it's yours. The clubs holding company have had at least 3 interested parties or so I'm told. Also, Bet 365 turnover has increased by almost 10 billion this year! Crazy Anyone know a mad old rich sort named Victoria? I can think of one - probably doesn't like being thought of as an old sort. Certainly mad though!

I think we should be asking more than 1.25m a season for naming rights we need be a little more ambitious

Apart from going from an original name to a sponsored name, has any club actually changed from their previous sponsors name to a new one?

Was Mcalpine Stadium, then changed to Galpharm stadium, now John Smiths Stadium. I think the reason most Stokies (including me) would like to keep the name Britannia (even if part of a new sponsor name) is that Britannia has always seemed to be a good name for a stadium - much less naff than copying Benfica and calling it the "Stadium of Light" for example. I remember when it was announced that the stadium would be the Britannia that I felt happy at the way things had panned out. I don't have a problem with sponsored stadia but some of them just sound naff. We were incredibly lucky that our local Building Society and sponsor happened, at the time, to have a name which just sounded "right" for an English football stadium. I had my first account with the Britannia about 60 years ago when it was called the "Leek and Moorlands Building Society" - imagine having that as the name of the stadium!!!! I really hope that we find a stadium sponsor who will be happy to keep the Britannia name alive as part of the new stadium name. Then we can all keep on calling it the Brit!

I really think the chances of Britannia staying as any part of the name are nil. I think everyone keeps forgetting that, as good as it sounds, its still a company name. The stadium wasnt called that after pride for Britishness or anything like that. It was called that after a building society. And that was because they were the highest bidder. Otherwise we could of been the Tesco stadium or whatever. I cant see any new sponsor agreeing to have their name associated with a soon to be defunct building society. Its like asking Warrior if we can have Warrior Adidas on our shirts next season. Think we have all got to be prepared to say goodbye to the Brit. Although knowing what people are like round here with changes of names they will call it the brit for evermore. People still tell me i work for PMT! A company name that dissapeared about 10 years ago!

If the Britannia BS was continuing as a name on the high street, then I think you would be right - no new sponsor would want to have Britannia as part of the name. And I would imagine that the Coop/Britannia would consider a court case to stop it happening. But the Britannia name is disappearing from the high street - I notice my local Britannia branch in Keswick had the sign replaced with a blue and white Coop Bank sign only last week. Accordingly, as the word Britannia isn't itself copyright (just the typeface/logo) the word can continue to be used as part of the stadium name should the club and the new sponsor wish to do so. I think that in a remarkably short time people will cease to associate the word Britannia with the building society just as the previous names 'Leek and Moorlands' and 'Leek and Westbourne' have passed into history. The name Britannia will revert to being associated in the public mind with: a patriotic vision of Britain, with the last night of the Proms and (hopefully) with Stoke City's stadium. Enough of me rabbiting on! It would be nice to know fans views on this. I wonder if the club and the Supporters Council could organise a poll (possibly an email one, advertised on the website and in the match day mag) with a single question - "Would you prefer the word Britannia to be retained as part of the stadium name if/when a new sponsor for the stadium is appointed?" yes/no

I agree, John - We have been very lucky to have a sponsored stadium that did not appear to be sponsored and even had a (tenuous) link with the name of our old ground. But even if the Britannia name was retained, I think you're right; as a minimum, a sponsor is going to want to add their own brand to it. So I think the best we would end up with is, The McDonald's Britannia Stadium. Not much point paying £1.25m unless your brand-name is on MoTD every other week? And I think the danger is that potential sponsors will feel they are getting a poor deal if "most" still refer to the stadium as the Brit (and as you and Prudhoe have put, even if it was a full name change, many people are likely to keep calling it the Brit, regardless). Unless there is a raft of other PL clubs doing the same thing (?) then I doubt any retention will be allowed, as it will cheapen-the-deal (fingers crossed, though - And I agree that the Council should raise it) Sadly, I guess the days of Saint Peter dipping into his pocket, to forego the naming rights, are long gone

Surely theres enough of us on this board to buy the rights. £1.25m a season - thats about a tenner each a year!
We could call it the 'Ast thee got their brown wings footie grynd'

If I was a sponsor I wouldn't be happy that I'd spent a million quid for everyone still to refer to it as 'The Britannia' even though it was officially called the JCB Britannia Stadium.

If I was a sponsor I wouldn't be happy that I'd spent a million quid for everyone still to refer to it as 'The Britannia' even though it was officially called the JCB Britannia Stadium. I suspect the fans will call it the Britannia whatever happens. I have relatives in the North East who support Newcastle and I never heard one of them refer to the Sports Direct Stadium during the brief period when Ashley changed its name. It isn't really the 25,000 fans of SCFC who the sponsors will be aiming their advertising at - it is the print media and broadcasters and the millions of people they reach all over the world. From a sponsors' point of view it is what the print media and broadcasters refer to it as which will concern them. And they will use the full name - whatever it is. So, if it became (just as an example) "The JCB Britannia" then that is how the print media and broadcasters would refer to it.

To go off on a tangent, have JCB ever had any connection with us in the past in terms of advertising/sponsorship? I can`t recall them showing any interest in Stoke City. It would be great to have another hugely successful company on board.

If they WERE to change their mind, I'd love to have them as our sponsors. To have a world class company like JCB from "just down the road" as our sponsor would be superb.

I think a hybrid type name would sound terrible anyway. As great as it would be just to call it the Brit, we'll just have to get used to something different. Not the end of the world

Bamford is a clever businessman, that's why he's never put any money towards stoke. It would purely be dead money to him. JCB is a huge name worldwide so he doesn't need to spend money to have it put on tv every Saturday. If someone wants a digger, chances are the first name that springs to mind is JCB (wankers)

Any new sponsor wont agree to Britannia staying because the name will then always just get shortened to Britannia stadium. No matter what its called there will still be alot of Stoke fans that will always call it the brit. Nothing the new sponsors can do about that. However if Britannua stays the stadium will have a long name. For example say its The Bet 365 Britannia Stadium. Which will result in many people who are not stoke fans still shortening it to the britannia stadium. Imagine soccer saturday next season. Is Jeff Stelling going to say, and now over to the bet 365 britannia stadium. Doubt it. More likely he'd just say, now over to the britannia stadium. If the name is changed to the bet 365 stadium though he will say. over the the bet 365 stadium. Thats the kind of exposure any new sponsor will want in return for their money.

In going global and in addition to agreeing a partnership with Warrior, I have it on good authority that the club are hoping to cinch a deal with a French health foods company for the stadium rights.

i don't see why we can't keep the name Britannia. as a word it isn't copywrighted or trademarked so all we need is to change the signage so the font etc. is different to the Building socity's logo (although they won't exist anymore anyway will they?) Im guessing the 1.25 mill per season might have something to do with it
